Thumbs Up

It's been a while since I've posted here, a lot has happened in my life over the past three years. Anyway I've been on the Hybrids since they came out, mainly V1 and in the past couple of months the V2. Background data, I'm 65kg, 840 sq cm medium/high aspect foil, Flysurfer connect bar with 21m lines and a location where the wind is good when it blows.

The V1 Hybrids I have used are the 2.5m for stronger winds and the 3.5m for light winds. Yes, I know they seem ridiculously small but being 65kg and steady seabreezes you get away with a lot Also my main aim is to foil upwind and then ride waves/swell/windchop downwind So I only want enough power to get up on the foil as once I'm foiling, upwind is relatively easy. The V1 Hybrids are less powerful than equivalent Peaks and have less grunt to get you out of the water. Sometimes it takes a minute or two with big figure 8 loops when it's light to get up and going. Once foiling the V1 is very comfortable, didn't notice any high bar pressure and they were a little less effective upwind than the Peaks. However they shine downwind, nothing can compare to the drift and ease of use.

The upside of less upwind pointing ability is the way the kite sits further back in the window which is great for drift. It's like a helium balloon, it just floats downwind as you ride waves or even pump the foil towards the kite. I can't recall ever having the kite fall out of the sky even in the lightest wind. Not that that would be a problem as the kite relaunches incredibly easily. I used the 2.5m in 12-30 knots and the 3.5m in 8 to 15 knots. This is the wind strength measured at the shore, there's possibly 2-3 knots more out in the bay but not necessarily. On the windiest of days I did rig my Connect bar with 14m lines and it does increase the top end wind range making it more comfortable. But it can be harder to get up if the wind drops too much. I do have a Peak5 5m if the wind is ridiculously light, say 4 to 8 knots but kitefoiling is not that much fun in that wind especially for wave riding. So it was hardly ever brought out.

So suffice to say the Hybrid V1 is a great kite and certainly suited my for my style of riding. Now onto the Hybrid V2 which I have been using for the past 2 months after I received stock of them in a number of sizes. Following on from my experience with the V1 I chose the two smallest sizes in the range, the 3m and 4.5m. Would have liked smaller as I don't need much kite when it's windy but I had heard the V2 had a wider wind range. First try of the V2 was with the 4.5m and it immediately had plenty of power. Granted it was 1m bigger than the V1 but it still felt maneuverable and fast in the air. Upwind was quite different, it pointed quite a lot higher with little effort and gusts were easily absorbed. Downwind was a little different.

As mentioned better upwind performance generally comes with diminished downwind performance as the kite isn't sitting as deep in the window and this was true. This meant a bit more awareness was initially required to keep the kite where desired as greater steering input was needed with a kite closer to the edge of the window. And also being a bigger sized kite than the comparable V1 series was a factor as well. However the helium balloon like drift was still there and relaunch was still incredibly easy. I tried the 3m V2 in higher winds around 20+ knots and felt like I would like a 2m version for my weight So I changed to 14m lines for the 3m kite in stronger wind and it was much better for me. The additional grunt of the V2 3m made getting up on the foil easier than the 2.5m V1.

So in summary these are all great kites if you're into freeride kitefoiling and in my experience can't be matched for downwind foil wave riding. I don't think these kites have been marketed as well as they could have been for foiling. Unless you're into jumping or speed, every kitefoiler could increase their fun on the water with a Hybrid of either model and Peaks as well. I have sold some larger sizes of Hybrids and Peaks to heavier kitefoilers and they have found them to perform similar to my experience and prefer them to inflatables.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions, have fun, Dave
