I have the VXR v2 18m, and it has been my favourite kite (until I got my new Vantage18). I cannot comment about the 17 but can say that I found each of the sizes (I have 8. 10, 13 and 18) to be good kites.

I am a very keen racer and have been very pleased with the kites as race kites. Not sure about for freestyle - I am sure there are kites that would be better for that. But a 17 would certainly get you out a lot more than a dedicated freestyle kite.

The kites are stable, user friendly and quick around the course. Relaunch in light wind takes a bit of practice and technique, but any race kite has similar challenges. The secret is not to drop it in the water .

I had a great session today in 7 to 10 knots, with the Perth Swan river all to myself. If you want to get into racing, I reckon you can't go wrong with this kite.

Thanks, what makes the vantage a better kite than vrx v2.

My main agenda is to find a kite and board that suits Bali conditions. And little bit of course racing in the local yachtie club.

I guess the freestyle would on be a bit of jumping and mowing the lawn.

All in all something to get me going in light winds And crank up wind. I use to have a zephyr (Great kite but I want to get up wind alot quicker)

My plan is to use the kite with a v2 slayer.

The VXR v2 has issues with bridal - the individual lengths of the bridal components. If you buy one I would look at making up a new bridal.

I never heard about an issue with bridles, and certainly never experienced it myself.

When I started riding the 13m Vantage towards the end of the racing season here in Perth, I noticed the difference in my performance against the other guys, compared with when I was on the VXR V2. It was hard to nail down exactly where the differences were, I was just quicker around the course, more competitive. I had a better upwind angle and I think I travelled a bit quicker at that angle. It also felt a little lighter in my hands, a little more responsive. With the 18m Vantage (which I only upgraded to recently) the thing I particularly noticed was it seemed to have a more powerful upstroke in lighter wind. Also I think that when the wind picks up, the 18 Vantage seems to handle it a little better than the VXR.

Are you planning on getting a course board for the racing? With either of these kites you will be ripping upwind. I used to have a Zephyr too, a great kite but nowhere near the upwind ability of a race kite.

Thanks,
At the moment I was going to use the 2015 slayer v2.
Its probably more just mowing the lawn and the occasional race against the local yachties.
