Fred Rompelberg's Absolute World Speed Record Cycling.
On 3 October 1995 he cycled behind a motor dragster on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, with a speed of 268.831 km/h.
He was the oldest professional cyclist in the world at the time. This is still a world record...

Bicycle, or jet powered motorbike?

Still pretty cool though...

A bicycle with a motor on it - is no longer a bicycle.

Might as well be called a light-weight motorcycle.

I think the true cycling speed record on a flat is held by Jens Voight

Google tells me the fastest bicycle is the VeloX3, pedalled by Sebastiaan Bowier en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastiaan_Bowier at 133.78 kph. On a flat surface unpaced!

Correction, it's not exactly flat. The rules allow for a maximum slope of 2/3 rds of a percent. So back in the day one fellow drove all over the state looking for a flattish bit of road just within that maximum allowed gradient. Another thing in common with speed sailors is that last minute touch up with the wet and dry.

No pedalling or jets here, just downhill...most of the way.

You're not wrong. He went to the trouble of making a light frame and it failed. Weight doesn't matter for a downhill run like that.

I think 'power-assisted pedal cycle' is what you are looking for, but itneeds a set of spokey dokes though, when they stop rattling you know you are going really fast

Well that's what you get for not riding down hill in a Australian made Hillbrick Bicycle.

At least he got a mouth full of volcanic ash. Good for the skin and dietary system.

Spoke with a guy who was riding one around Adelaide. The power is amazing and he used it to climb mountain bike trails for downhill riding. But the main feature is the quality of the suspension, which he claimed took an 8 foot vertical drop to bottom-out.
