Is he going to have proper lessons with the aim of surfing - and someone who surfs to go with ....... or paddle around on his guts twice each summer on holidays and that's it?

Former - cheap 5'5" ish Fish style or a 7ft mini mal style. Get wax also, its amazing how many people don't know and the kid hates it as a result.

If the latter, any foam thing.

Caveat: I'm a crap surfer. I just saw what works at the kids fun day every Sat morn. They need to be engaged and have decent stuff if its a serious wanting to stand up endeavour.

A nugget foamy, kids love them , my young bloke who's now 24 goes off in very average surf when he wouldn't bother otherwise
plenty of young crew here have them
