Hi everyone. This is just a quick msg to anyone who has recently been diagnosed with RRV.
I have never written on a forum in my life until this, however after a boat trip to the mentawais in late april early may i was diagnosed with RRV. It has now been 4 weeks to the day since i first contracted symptoms.
Like a lot of people who contract this disease i started reading forums on other peoples experiences and was fairly spun out as its basically all negative and most experiences are of the extreme variety.
Anyway my point to getting on this forum was to say that its not all doom and gloom.
I was housebound and really unwell for 10 days. at about the 2 week mark i was getting out of the house and although lacking a lot of energy was starting to get around and get on with life. By the 3 week mark until 4 weeks i was starting to go back to the gym all be it very lightly and was feeling 90% of my normal self.
From the 4 week mark onwards i have been very very close to feeling extremely normal and energy levels and my brain function is close to normal and i will likely get back in the water surfing in the next day or two.
In summary I'm not saying i may not have a recurrence of the symptoms and i have to be careful i don't over do things which seems to be the reason for people relapsing. I will also add that i had the luxury of being able to rest properly early on in the piece as well as eating the best foods possible to fuel my body. I was also aided in seeing a naturopath early on who put me on some Zinc and vitamin B supplements to aid immune recovery.
Obviously everyone is different but this has been my experience and i just wanted to highlight that its not all doom and gloom and with a bit of luck and in looking after yourself i feel that some people may not experience the hectic symptoms that you tend to read on all or most of the other forums on this disease.
Cheers Daniel
Is there ppreventitive pills to take for rrv and dengue fever like Malaria?
I got Malaria in png it pretty gnarly two stays in hospital and I was lucky it wasnt the super deadly strain
You sound a lot more positive than the recent poster discussing Lyme disease. He was having showers with his surfboard!
I was once bitten by a dirty mozzie and ended up with RRV. Knock the crap out of me for about 3-4 weeks, slowly came good. I never had the arthritis that approx 10% people get and hangs for ages. I guess i was lucky. I was pretty lethargic for about one and half months. But all better after that. Then pretty much 1 year to the day i was feeling like crap and really lethargic for about a week, and my wife said "isn't it a year ago you got RRV?" Yep. But that only lasted a week.
Now when i feel lethargic it is generally self induced with a little GAF factor zero
No recurrence of the RRV since and that was at least 5 years now. I think you'll be good
Got RRV in PNG about 5 years ago. took weeks and weeks to feel anywhere close to normal. ( the local hospital and cold and flu tablets didn't do me any favours either)
I still get knocked off the perch every so often with a bad flu like feeling. i still put this down to RRV
Ross River Fever, been there done that. Finally went to the doctor after being nagged to death by the misses and was told there was nothing that could be done. Just enjoy the ride. Probably lasted 6 weeks and peaked around day 7. Felt very weak, got a bit of a rash and felt pretty lousy. That was about 35 years ago and never got it again. Not sure if that means I've built up immunity to it or just lucky. Mosquitos still love me and am still usually the first to get bitten.
I've camped at Ross R and I've gotta say there are a f load of mozzies, didn't get the virus though! ![]()

The one in Townsville?
That's a deadly place
Yep in Brownsville. Lol, young, dumb and needed somewhere free to stop, so we always headed to Nat Parks, Dams or Lookouts. Most of the time was awesome except that night, think of a car sauna...... ![]()
