Single hooks nowhere near hookup rate..esp in small lures.
Singles more common with big game because of the size of the mouth, bite and strength of hook is a factor. You could try not being such a Muppet (having done it before helps u not do again I spose) and crushing your barbs. Nasty spot there though. Right near the artery. I saw a photo of a guy with a b52 with all three hooks embedded across his face (crew member back swing) and 5 hours from help.

I target big Barra, I would say they have a bigger mouth then any other fish, probably the biggest that would smash a lure.

I got done by the lure wile taking the hook out Of a rat Barra (70-75cm), was still green. It shook it's head and the treble that was free stung me.

I feel that if it was a single hook I would have got it out easyer and not have gotten stung.

In my hobie Island sailing yak

I hit a 4ft mackie just outside the reef somewhere between Sandy Bay and turquoise Bay.

Dragged it in over the outriggers. The thing went bananas.
First treble went right through between my up yours finger and ring finger on my right hand.

I'm right handed

And the fish was still having Grand mal seizure fits.

Summoned everthing in me and pulled the hook back through as i was starting to get pushed into the impact zone

Over the week my hand swelled up like I was wearing a boxing glove.

yeah man, it sucks a big 1. Sometimes you just can't help it. I've never had any injurys from fish other then Barra, they always seam to cause me damage with all there spines!

I'm still recovering from the treble in the arm. It went threw a nerve and hooked under the tendon, so my index finger and thumb were completely numb, but I've now got the feeling of pins and needles, so I gather it's coming back.

cause of that I'm now trying to run barbless single hooks.

Operation?

push it thru another 3mm and you can cut barb off, then pull it out.

Yeah that's what I was thinking but right next to the artery... Could even be thru the vein and plugging the holes.... ?? I think if I was going to follow your advice I'd do it outside the emergency entrance and save myself 2hrs.

You can see I tiny bit of the hook, the doctor at my local pushed it through but because of the tendon that was as far as he got it. when I came in there was no hook exposed At all.

Got sent to a bigger hospital and the orthopedic guys put me under, took 2 hours to put at together.

All up 3 days in hospital, 14 hours the hook was in my arm for, missed my kite nationals, and had to go straight to work to cover a shift!

barra dont always inhale the lure/ often territorial swipe, head bash. Plus you get a second or third go at hooking.
how often have you hooked a barra just on the head, or on the side of the face.
Yes I know plastics have a single hook, but they rely on the more traditional swallow. Hard bodies and the way they are worked often ilicit a different sort of strike. Thats why they make the lures with trebles. How many gun (i.e. not yourself) barra fishermen do you see using hard bodies with single hooks? Also you will deaden the action of the lure with singles. even putting bigger or different trebles on can have an adverse effect and shange the dynamic of the lure. And what about snag proofing? If you had any time up you would know to crush your barbs, not only for the fish you release, but your own personal safety. Dont believe me, ask a reputable tackle store.
Learn how to handle and release properly. And get your hand of it. 70cm plus is not a rat and welcomed by most fisherman.

Awe man I don't want to sound like a clown but the fish I chase are double the size inpound Barra. Last year I got I 3 big girls in the 1 night they all were 147cm. When the fish are on I can land up to 30 fish with countless throws. I imagine you would get a better hook up on the fish you do land. How meny fish get lost from treble get bent or poorly hooked fish. I think that if it had singles you would pin them in the corner most of the time.
I think that's why Rapala brought out the xxx rap cast www.rapala.com/eu-en/?utm_source=rapala-au&productgroup=Lures&iid=533

no u dont sound like clown. I was going to say with the exception of impoundment barra.(rat/ size)
Can I ask where?
I can't comment about the style of fishing yr'e doing because I dont have the patience for impoundment fishing, and only rarely catch or hook fish that size. Would love to be there when they're on but I daresay you have many long nights inbetween.
I guess all you can do is give it a try with the singles. Do yo uneed to put so much drag on fish? I know a guy who catchs many a night on normal lures but they are in ther basin of faust, so can fish lighter drags. If you want you could chat to Lindsay dobe. He's a top impoundment guide but owns a tackle store as well and no doubt has tried lots of things. I think he pioneered the huge lure movement for impoundment fish (07) 4945 4641

Hey Kemp keep an eye out for those logs that move.
some crocs get about in the creek as you know. But I wouldn't trust any of that wetland mate.
