tech boffins i have a question, if u have a smart phone, but not connected to internet EVER, when u take the qr code photo where does it go, is it useless. similiar question would it send the info if u have wifi turned on when it hits free wifi somewhere. can't seem to find answer, think it assumes we have mobile wifi turned on all time, i do but i know my dad never has it on and couldn't care less what fun is on the internet.
If you have mobile wifi on, does it send the info straight to a big computer somewhere. I wonder how many people just wave their phone near the thing to avoid the dreaded health authority call to tuck in for the next 2 weeks.
No, there is no way it can work without internet. The QR code is effectively telling your phone what site to contact, or what site details to pass on. When it does it then passes on your details and those of any guests to say that you were there at that time.
I am assuming that most people have internet access turned on all the time these days. Its cheap and often included.
If you wanted the reverse, you would have to have your own QR code that the venue would then scan, but this system used now relies on your phone talking to a remote server.
It depends on what that QR code is for. It won't open any websites but can still do few things...

Seems most blokes pretend to scan the QR but are actually taking a pic of the name and phone number of the chick who signed the paper register in front of them......
As to the original question I dunno........ but Formula seems to make sense
Youre phone doesn't need mobile WIFI Turned on to access the interweb this is normally done firstly through your phone access then WIFI only if yolu have WIFI set up.

Think you'll find it's the other way around....first checks for wifi, then only uses phone access if it isn't connected to wi-fi

Yep, you'd be right there, but unless the phone is on a phone/no data plan (do they exist?) then it should have access to data, then the only issue is whether the phone has been manually set up to stop using data then it should still work.
If your dad is never connected, why does he have a smart phone?
to take pics?

Its getting harder these days to easily get non-smart phones. My father who I wouldn't have trusted to use a normal home phone has surprisingly gotten used to a smartphone. I would have bought him one of those dumb phones that just have a keypad, but there was some reason he wanted a smartphone. I have learned my lesson though and let one of the other siblings get it for him and set it up... and be the service desk for him when things go wrong ![]()
I think even the non-smart phones still have limited apps and data usage though, unless its a really basic model.
Do Telcos even sell plans without data now? Its almost like most are all calls for free, and data capped at a reaonable amount or unlimited. I remember "not so long ago" thinking that 19c for 30 seconds was good value.
