Maybe if they received a decent wack of funding, they would be able to produce quality viewing for your Saturday night. Perhaps the fact you are watching all that child birth is a symptom of how under funded our ABC is. The fact they are still so relevant and threatening to Murdoch et al says a lot.

On another tack, speaking as someone who recently witnessed their firstborn entering the world; I think as a society we are losing touch with such basic things as child birth. Unfortunately I think we now need television to bring general awareness of some of these most fundamental of occurrences. Once upon a time, we lived in small communities and were exposed to the trials and tribulations across the full gamut of life. Nowadays we live comparatively isolated lives and many normal life events are somewhat traumatic simply because we have lost familiarity with such events.

Edit: Now the show has hit my time zone, I realise it isn't quite the 'doco' I was thinking about so maybe some of the 'educational' elements are also not there. Still, we really have lost touch with the basic things in life, the 'First World' has its benefits, but we have lost a fair bit to get here...

The problem isn't so much the cuts; it's the direct contradiction of what was said the night before the election. Someone who points and screams 'liar' for 6 years deserves to be judged harshly on blatant lies.

Having said that, CSIRO cuts are far worse for the nation.

Am I right in guessing we are now off to Heavy Weather?

Surely it is a sign of a Government Gone Wrong when a simple conversation about television programing turns into a political conversation after one or two comments.

If any consolation, there is not much better on foxtel on Saturday or other nights.

Shame about CSIRO also.

Suspect a lot of conversations turn to politics quickly nowadays. Education. Cars. Farming

Strange comment...

...it's not that long ago that childbirth was for mums and midwives only. The dads role would be to provide for the mum and child, and get them to the hospital (or call in the midwife) in time and pace a worn path in the adjoining room with a pocket full of cigars.

We have 3 kids and I have to agree with Sands in this one. If you want to know more about childbirth - google it or hire a dvd (even visit a farm during lambing/calving times if you really want to witness the 'miracle' of life) - same for most shows these days though I guess.

Childbirth is not dissimilar to the Alien movies; giant parasites and goo and blood and screaming.

If you are talking simply talking about the males role in child birth, then yes, I agree Sailhack. I was speaking in much broader terms; the time you speak of was a relatively short span of time, but even in the 19th/20thC, communities were much more familiar with child birth, it being more common for it to occur in the home or Drs clinic. Today we very unfamiliar with the process until the day our own child is born.

Funny you mention visiting the farm, my only experience with birthing (apart from my own) prior to our first child was dogs, cats and cattle. Apparently you should not mention that familiarity in antenatal class

Witnessing your child's birth is a wonderful experience. I especially liked the language that came from my wife during it.

Along the lines of "Somebody get this effing thing out of me!!!"

I think that program is very educational. It shows what great advances have been made in the last 50 years.
Back then, babies were born very small with purple and red screwed up faces. In fact, purple and red screwed up everything.
Now they are born at least twice the size, about the same size as what used to be a 3 or 4 month old, and looking all white and pink and no screwed up faces at all.
And nobody calls "Nurse! More hot water and towels,.. quickly" anymore.
Isn't science wonderful.

cant stand watching those shows, but was there in the firing line for all our girls.
i seemed to find all sorts of funny thing going on around me. warning an orderly to step back and then watching wifey projectile vomit on him when he didnt.
then he simply smiled and says " thats the first one tonight who isnt pissed!"
by baby number 5 all the kids came to the birth, and daughter number 1 actually delivered the baby .
absolutely amazing moments
glad the st**y nappies are gone tho

dunno what I am doing wrong.....

I've been babysitting no.1 offspring's firstborn heaps lately, and not one icky mess for me to clean up yet
Little tyke has been saving up for either the Sandwichmaker - or for the trip home with the kids
Used to be the same with the 9 nieces and 4 nephews, not one mess to clean up between them all - over 20something years.

[Might have been the hint of being hosed down on the back lawn that did it]

The reason the ABC is getting funding cuts is they would report today's seige in Sydney as
"slightly coloured man of non-anglo religious beliefs terrified as he is surrounded by nazi cops intent on beating him"
