A mate had it in the UK when I was there about 6 months ago and it looked too good to be true too. Like torrents with a Youtube like UI for searching and streaming content. I was bloody impressed.

Kodi is a multimedia player software. You can download it to a range of devices, including your PC, without the need to buy extra hardware. I run it on Raspberry PI (about $60) and it's fine. In my experience it requires some setting and tweaking to get the most out of it and get all the required plug ins installed and running and it's not necessarily plug & play.

Kodi is one thing.
The plugins to get free movies/series is another.

I would say 50% of the plugins don't work.

Agreed that Kodi is a great option. If you are even moderately handy you can build a box yourself. Built a Raspberry Pi box with Kodi recently via online guides. With a combo of the Exodus plugin for streaming or downloading nearly anything, combined with SickRage, CouchPotato and Transmission for auto downloading TV/Movies of interest that are delayed or aren't getting released in Oz it's a great combo. But probably best to use a VPN with it to avoid any letters from media rights holders. Only downside of RaspberryPi is no useful Netflix streaming through it.
