Gypsydrifter,

Offer the mum 5 bucks, and hope for the best.

She's going to show her kid the post online to make a point. No bargains to be had IMO.

Kid probably needs a good whack over the buttocks too.

Friends used to threaten their kids with 'Herbie the anti-Santa'. If the kids were misbehaving, 'Herbie the anti-Santa' would visit their rooms when they were asleep and remove all their toys!

Not the preferred punishment method imo...but makes for some funny kid reactions.

My children when they were kids used to be threatened with the dreaded "wet wooden spoon" and chilli sauce for bad language. Both very effective.

Ch 2 news item this morning, day-care kids with a new process where the kids elect the guidelines re mid-day meals, smoko (recess or playtime break for those who are too young) and other activities. Now day-care they are looking at 1-2-3 year olds they claim.
One of the ladies who has sort of engineered the program was asked, so what if one child is being a little over active and causing havoc within the group, stays at the snack bar and cleans the place out and so on?.
Priceless answer from a what I would call a non experienced minder of children.
Quote "well we would take the child aside and have a good talk to them explaining the do's and don'ts', end quote.
Like a 1-2-3 year old who's attention span is rather short, will take any notice of some adult giving a lengthy explanation on what is good and bad.
All little kids will hear in the 5 minute talking to is "Now little Johnny/Mary you must mustn't blah blah blah blah blah, now off you go."

I got the cane at school.

It made me much worse, acting up and behaving more badly afterwards. Immediately afterwards.

However I then got the cane on both hands and I figured out real quick that escalation or continuation of my behaviour would result in continuation and definitely escalation of the punishment so I stopped.
No need for timeout corner, behaviour management plan, a reflection essay and a strategy meeting with my parents. Seems the modern way is namby pamby stuff where the same weak punishment is dished out time and again with no escalation

When my siblings and i were kids, mum and dad didn't have very much money. The few things we were given we cherished because they were few and far between. If they broke then we would try to fix because there was no replacements, many other things were hand-me-downs.

I think kids (many) these days don't appreciate what they get because they almost get everything they ask for plus more without actually earning it. so there's no value of appreciation. Sad really

Limit the gifts. make 'em work a little for the things they get and i don't mean child labor.

I only get the semi-broken, or worn-out toys given to me as the previous rich kid gotten sick of them. Unfortunate for the toys, especially those mechanical once, they don't last two days as I would be busy taking them apart, and spent the next entire week trying to put them back. For my sins, I did get a few whacks and some stern words from my mom.

I did have limited success in re-assembling the toys maliciously damaged by me. The funny thing is that I learned about the little gears and springs within the toys. I became an engineer. I also developed a habit wanting to fix broken things such as the sliding doors and especially washing machines. I had near new washing machines at the tips and brought back to life. Simple things such as a paper clip lodged under the drum, or a CPU chip that can be easily cannibalized from another from another broken one. I now have three washing machines !

Right now, I have a nice machine that won't spin. It will get a thorough probing...Good habit to have at the end of a windsurfing season.

That is the price you pay when you refused to allow a washing machine to die of a natural cause By the way, they are at different properties
