Will be there march-june. What should i prioritise for gear and what sizes needed?
advanced kiter, charge on a SUP, just started winging but i'll be solid by then, lazy surfer and haven't prone foiled but its on my list and will pick up a prone board if its worthwhile
-wave kiting
-winging
- kite foiling
- surfing (shortie or longboard or SUP)
- prone foiling
Used to sail a Javelin out of New Plymouth Harbour 45 years ago. Doing it one day when that cold air falling off Mt. Egmont freshened and got us planeing back to Aus. Rode it for about ten minutes and then it took us a couple of hours beating to windward to get back to harbour.
Apparently there is a crazy place to go surfing nearby called Stent Road.

abseiling, snow skiing, down hill running (when Egmont blows its top)
Skis and peak4 are in for the snow at the back end!
Yeah good luck getting here for March!
But when you eventually do enjoy. If you want freedom then hire a camper otherwise you clock up the KS driving the coast and petrol is $2.50/l.
I had started kiting but wavesailing was my thing and some of the lauch spots are light and gusty.
Took up surfing and that time of year probably the lightest wind but still going to get wind but not every day so take your sup for those longer paddles with some of the reefs.
Haven't been there for while but sure some will be wing dinging.
In winter when these snow it's hard core club field with t bar and nut cracker. No gromer so either powder or spring Slush and when it's on its awesome but otherwise icy and dangerous.
Thanks for tips, extended work trip and will be in NP, should have some time to get into the water/weekends etc, no freedom unfortunately 515! Back end I will try and take some time to go south island and head backcountry with the kites.
So i'm going with surfboard, kiteboard, skis, SUP... any foiling to be done or is it shallow/otherwise average? Brief takeaway from your link cisco is 'lots of rocks'.
Enough decent SUPing to drop the surfboard? Shoulder injury and displaced rib make it my most painful sport unfortunately.
they make WA borders look loose, certainly ain't easy getting in!
Ruapehu? There is something pretty satisfying about the phrase 'skiing an active volcano'.
About my 3rd year snowboarding when the eruptions started, being keen I still kept going. The initial lahar flow improved one of the gullies
and after that just smelly Sulphur ash.
Done plenty days the with two commercial fields gives a choice on which is better on the day.
Ruaphau needs a lot of snow to cover rocks where as most fields 50cm covers tussok and good. August is usually best month for south island fields.
Back to watersports here's a link for kiting

The naki coast locals refer to "course black sand" other wise known as rocks
but there are a few sand beaches.
A mate Stevo is currently at the naki mainly for windsurf wavesailing and he would bring a sup but not sure if he took his foilboard?
I never bothered with Stent road but there are so many spots with surf depending on wind direction. With your ribs, maybe leave your surfboard behind
My cousins live on one of the main surf beaches (fitzroy) and surf there on my sup almost every time I see them (2-3x a year). Theres so many surf breaks around there it's not funny- def not required to bring a shortboard if you can take a sup over.
A lot of people kite, foil and kayak at Fitzroy and East End (which is just down on the same beach).
stacks of walking and hiking tracks too around the mountain and other peaks
