I want want want.
We have probably all heard this at some point in our lives. As a parent you have probably repeated this back to your kids. Anyway, I has having a discussion the other day with a mate and he claimed that there was a particular item that he "needed". As a stir, I suggested that he only 'wanted' it, and the topic got debated at length.

The conclusion was that where there is a need there is a want. I thought it might be a bit of fun to see if anyone on Seabreeze can actually came up with a 'need' where there is not a want.

(and don't say you need food to live. We went there too. You need (want) food because want to live).

Over to you .

You don't need to - you just don't want to get wet.

Want is a stronger position than need. Want is a motivation that takes your soul somewhere. Need makes you follow a routine.

Want suggests more. Need suggests lack.

I want to go to the moon even though I don't need to go there.

The best post matching user name this year A++ for you sir.

I have bad habits - until recently money flow was ok'ish. For the first time in my life I understand what it is like to pay for groceries with coins.
In a million years I never would have thought stopping my bad habits as an option - I need these things in life. I now realize those habits
are a pure want basis not a need, so away they have gone. Certainly not happy but right now family comes first and at my age a perfect life lesson
has been self tought.

Good topic - nice change

Some of you got the point I was trying to make (sorry cisco, your reply was a little too deep after a few scotchs )
Test Pilot, I will watch all that video tomorrow, but I understand the differance between want and need. In the beginging the lady says we need water, food and shelter to live. The topic being "where there is a need there is a want" suggests that we want water food and shelter, because we want to live. Just like Thinkaboutit, doesnt want to sleep in a puddle of his own wee....

Whatever the habit was youngbull, it's good to here you've turned it around..

Reminds me of a conversation I had with my wife a while ago. She said "You'd rather go sailing than go to bed with me, wouldn't you!".

My reply..."Just how much wind are we talking about here?".

I need to breathe....

Breathing is an unconscious process that is automated so there is no want in the decision making process....

Yes, I want to live which is facilitated by breathing, but this is not a want decision....

In fact, the only way to over ride this, would be to want to die and hence hold your breath.

Does this facilitate a need without a want?

I usually take it that the difference between 'want' and 'need' is that if you don't get something you want, there will be no great negative consequences on your life.
There is no sharp divide between the two. It's all a matter of perception. So be careful not to confuse the boundary.

If you don't get something you need then there will be real negative consequences.
Thus, you might want a new jacket or you will catch a cold. But you don't need the flashest jacket in the shop. That's just a 'want'.
You might want a new car, but you don't need a Jaguar. In fact, you might not even need a new one. Just fix the old one.

I also think that most people these days think because they want something, they actually need it. Mostly they don't.

Maybe you want to stop breathing but the need to breath far outweighs your want. If you manage to hold your breath long enough you will black out and start breathing again involuntarily.

All are needed without want. Without them - there would be no living organisms in which to want.

the human body wont let you hold your breath till you die, at the extreme, it will go unconscious, allowing the unconscious body processes to continue uncompromised. So, there is no want in heart beat, breath etc, these are only needs.

Sooooo in order to stop breathing you "need" to "want" to die?
Or was it "want" to "need" to die!

You "want" a new car so you don't have to walk everywhere

Mehhhh! Thats just a "want". A desperate one none the less, but still just a "want".

I "need" to get my assignment finished by Monday, but I "want" to surf the seabreeze forums.
Or was it I "want" to get my assignment finished by Monday but I "need" to surf the seabreeze forums.
Oh now I've just confused myself.
None the less if it's not finished on time, me thinks my lecturer will enjoy "wanting" the "need" to fail me.
.....over and out.
