Hi,
I'm looking into buying a ute to put a slide on camper and all the toys on, wondering if anyone has any experience in doing something like this, what utes may be good for this kind of thing and what to avoid.
Meg.

Good topic Meg, I'd also like some feedback. I've been living in my campervan since March and I get set up envy with the slide ons. Keen to know how a 4WD slide would go in the sand with all the weight on the back.

I prefer the ones that don't have a pop top roof because it loses its stealthiness to some extent when you are staying somewhere you shouldn't be.

I also don't mind the ute setups that are not slide ons and they might be cheaper.

I normally carry 3-4 surfboards with me and not sure how well they would fit inside

Hi Meg1122, and welcome to the forum, however you may get more quality responses on a camper/4x4 style forum.

Having done a big trip last year up Cape York and back (through the centre), I noticed a few utes with slide on campers. They mostly seemed to be on Toyota, both the cruiser and the Hilux (mostly Hilux). I wouldn't know if there was a particular reason why, but it is just something I noticed. In my opinion though, NONE of the current range except for maybe the Cruiser and Patrol utes would be suitable without beefing up the suspension. Most new 4x4s need a 2" lift just to get them to were they should be.

If you don't particularly care which model car you couple it to, but care for the camper you put on the back, then I would pick the camper and then match it to a ute with a GVM that suits, upgrade the suspension, and go camping.....
