But before I do, can anyone recommend some worthwhile shows to watch?

I've got the U.S. version and I'm not negative on it, just don't think I use it enough to justify - too much choice. I don't want to commit to a new series. But I do like my documentaries - I watched a really great one on Nina Simone yesterday.

Any recommendations?

Yeah - I hear you...

I have watched and enjoyed the following:

Atari: Game Over
Planet Earth
Print the Legend
Storm Surfers
Bigger Stronger Faster
Food Inc
Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead
and some of the Ted series

I also have Orange is the new Black and Orphan Black TV series book marked as they have good reviews.

I also use it to catch up on movies I have missed. We watched Dallas Buyers Club last night and Argo on Friday night - both are a good watch.

I don't reckon you can complain for $12/mth... it has stopped me from visiting Channel BT.

All the best...

I watched one a while back that was great. Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon by Mike Myers.

Just watching something now - on Harry Nilson. It's crap. Just the usual doco fare - all these nobodys saying how great he is - about to give it the flick and watch Storm Surfers or Planet Earth. Seen most of the others you've mentioned.

I won't watch Orange is the new Black. But I'm looking forward to the next series of Wentworth, if that ever makes it on there. Also want to watch the next series of True Detective - but that aint on netflix - BOOOOOOO

10 mins into storm surfers - sorry, doesn't do it for me - f'ckn rich men on jetskis everywhere - give me a break. OK I'll flick on Planet Earth.

I would like to say that the USA version is a poor version of the UK series but it not that good.

If you want to watch shameless watch the UK series as it is soooo much better.

Re Netflicks - I had it, got rid of it.
Like myusernam I binge watch, one episode is never enough.
I have seen all I want to see on it

TED app on smart TV is great. All free.

I might give it the flick too, if I can convince GreenWife to part with it...

Watching Bloodline at the moment, Ben Mendelson steals the show. Worth watching.

www.smh.com.au/opinion/ben-mendelson-captures-his-place-in-hollywoods-sun-after-paying-his-dues-20150804-girhlp.html

I'm pretty sure when Mendelsohn joined Bloodline, the producers knew he'd be great but not that he'd devour every line of dialogue and scene he's in and spit out art; that he'd emerge as the undeniable superstar of the series.

In psychology, certain masculine traits like dominance and the willingness to enact retribution are deemed "costly" because they incur an evolutionary expense that cannot be faked – otherwise every clown could pretend to be so inclined and enjoy the benefits of having "a rep".

In Mendelsohn's case you see that cost – the price he's paid as a person - in his sad blue eyes.

He has the rare gift of being able to intimate one thing with those eyes, then say the opposite with his words. It keeps you guessing as an audience member and it does the same with his co-stars.

I find Netflix a bit limited, but only if you're trapped in one country. Try a VPN or the erm other trick to move around the world, and moreflicks.com to improve the view.

My issue with Netflix is that our Telstra broadband hangs really badly from about 8pm until 9pm. Won't even stream!

That is of course an issue with your connection/Telstra not Netflix, mine always streams instantly, no problem.

I'm not really a big tv watcher but it just gives me another option, I might give Bloodline a go that sounds ok.

I see Suits is on there (well a few seasons) I had seen that previously and quite enjoyed it, watching House of Cards ATM it's ok but not really that great.

There is a few documentary's etc that are ok.

Just to help with the lack of choice (not!!)
www.firetrust.com/products/hideaway-secure-unlimited-vpn
Will be giving this a whirl once I get the NUC (Intel mini box - one of many types) setup.

Like wine quality not quantity - of course a good bottle deserves attention!!
Currently use HMA for vpn but not g8 speeds.
SBS has just lifted its game - bigger library of movies and doco's - it is free too.

Would like to have NBN - to avoid all the artificial ADSL bondage - copper in our street is already past its use by date - and with this storm just about to hit it will likely get waterlogged once again (we are on a hill - be even worse on the flats).

Cheers

As a fan of the UK shameless series, I reluctantly started watching the US series last year.

Initially it seems like a rip-off of the US series, but then it seems to get into its own stride. I like it. It starts with the same character names, but then deviates a bit, but then feels like it goes its own way.

I felt a bit ripped off when the UK Shameless wrapped up. I didn't know the final show was the final show until it twigged that they brought in characters from much earlier in the series.

I watched the US series on Google Play, and the worst thing was the ability to binge on it. I would prefer it if they metered out the dosage a little!

I watched Print the Legend the other night - really enjoyed it. Turned out it was made by the same guy who made one of my other favourite doccos - the king of kong.

Since having Netflix, I binged watched a few series and felt dissatisfied at the end of it. The problem I'm finding with Netflix is the choice, there is so much, but so much of it is complete crap.

I'm liking the online way of watching TV though. ABC Iview and the SBS online offering is so much better - and they are free.

While I'm discussing Free to Air/IView - Is anyone else enjoying Kevin McCloud's - Escape To The Wild? I'm finding that series fascinating.

I've often dreamed about living somewhere remote. I could definitely do the Tonga thing, but Belise - I couldn't do that. However, what that family have achieved there is quite remarkable.

I was looking at Bloodline because of him - I've always liked Ben. He seems to have had a low profile in recent years. I don't take on the commitment to watch a new series lightly. Usually, I find that by season three they start to 'jump the shark'. The last series I binge watched was the Walking Dead. With hindsight after watching 5 series of it in a week, I ended up feeling quite depressed for wasting so many hours on that zombie mutilation rubbish.

Yeah, the walking dead is tooooooo drawn out. You feel ripped off when nothing has happened in one episode.

I think watching it all in one go is the problem. Seriously! If you had to wait until next week to watch the next episode you would probably enjoy it more. If you can see it straight away you feel happier initially, but after it, you feel a bit ripped off.

I have tried this with some TV series, and it really is better if you can make yourself wait.

The 'shark jump' moment for me in walking dead was when I saw Michonne with the two chained, limbless zombies she used to protect her. Such a great concept. But sadly after I saw that sequence, the series just went downhill for me. It wouldn't matter if I was binging on the series or watching it week to week.

I gave up on walking dead. The season formula was just too painful

E1 : cracker
E2 : ok I guess
E3: bit on the boring side
E4-6 : smaltzy religious soap opera rubbish with 37 seconds of zombie on screen
E7 : kill me now. Oh hang on last 5 minutes stuff happened.
E8 :Cracker

rinse & repeat.
