Found the dreaded termites in the garage eating my kids skatey ramp. The ramps gone and the area around the wall most likely spot the little buggers entered has been doused with coopex.

Anyone in WA know any good pest guys? Think we need full treatment.

Any one been through this? Whats the best treatment method and any ideas on a fair price?

Cheers

Ooops, you sprayed them? Noooo, bad idea!

If they are already in your home, the next 24 hours will not make any difference, but by spraying you make them go away and they will come back somewhere else.

You are supposed to disturb them as little as possible. This allows the pest control guy to bait them properly with arsenic, which kills them slowly, so they carry it back home and kill the nest when they are grooming one another.

Also, if you are paranoid, consider getting a few underground baits installed around the perimeter of your property to prevent any future infestations.

Definitely get a recommendation from a friend or colleague before engaging anyone in the pest control business. It's one of those businesses that can use fear to sell. Some require a huge deposit for Who knows what.

I have been at clients house doing a week long job while a tubby worker from a well known pest control company rocks up. He walked around with a $2 kids screwdriver from Big W and stabbed it into the ground around the property. After half an hour he goes into his ute a calls the office. 20 mins later he said he it is all done.

I said, 'You have found out what needs to be done?'

He replied. 'No it's all done. We only found a small amount of activity and it's been treated'.

'Have you checked that large dead stump right there or any of those stumps over there. Have you inspected the roof' I asked.

"Yeah. Checked the stumps and saw no activity. We don't go into roof spaces because it is a confined space and the unknown risk of asbestos"

I just stood there stunned.

Went to my ute that is full of tools, grabbed a man sized screwdriver and a battery circular saw. Cut the large stump and wrenched it open while he looked on. It nearly fell apart it was so jammed full of termites.

I kicked or jammed open the other old stumps all around the house and more termites were found. He reluctantly went back to his car and sprayed the hundreds of termites I discovered. Then went back to his car and phoned head office for another 25mins.

He went to leave again. 'What about inspecting the roof?' I asked. 'We don't inspect confined spaces with the risk of Asbestos.'

' I am working on the roof. Many of the tiles are removed. You can use my ladder'

He walked up the ladder. Peered into the roof. Got down, got in the car and left.

I rang the client and I explained to her in a gentle way that the Pest control service was less than satisfactory (nobody likes being told that they have just been ripped off). She explained it cost her thousands to pay the company to safe guard her property against termites. She had to pay most of it upfront and sign a contract before they would start.

The Pest control made more money in less than 2hrs than I was making for the week.

Best bet is termidor?sp? It's a product, hormone I think, that gets carried back to the nest and inhibits the grooming process allowing natural funguses to kill the nest. BTW they aren't ants they are cleser to a a cockroach

I work in facility management in Perth, I use Allpest WA and can recommend them. They do not charge upfront as well!
You should work some sort of contract and get the place checked yearly, if you get termites after the property has been treated and providing you have the right contract the pest control operator will replace the damaged wood at their cost. Good incentive to do the job properly.
