Seems like a frenzied, feeding shark hits hard and fast. I fear they wouldn't feel it and react in time.
^^^ This may be true but the surfsafe will (hopefully) rule out the enquisitive sharks that just want to see how you taste
I've had one for a year and will be getting a second fitted to my groveller for summer. With any luck we might eventually see big numbers of surfsafe units in the water and sharks may start to see humans as an annoying pain in the a... instead of associating us with food

In spite of my apparent cynicism, I totally agree with Mitchbat.
I think they will make a big difference in the number of 'attacks' which are just inquisitive nibbles.
I also think it is highly unlikely they would have a negative effect, i.e., they would not increase the risk of an attack.
I have never met an animal yet that enjoys a whack from an electric fence, and considering how sensitive a shark is to electric impulses, it's highly unlikely that a shark would enjoy such an encounter, even though the energy output is very much less. Although dogs have very sensitive noses but still enjoy a good snuffle over a long dead animal. Beats the heck out of me. That would have to be one hell of a hit to such a sensitive instrument. 
It will be a good thing if many people use them over an extended period so we can get some reliable info as to their overall effect.
If it turns out in 5 years time they are in widespread use and nobody gets attacked while using one, it would go a long way towards establishing their effectiveness.
So Mitchbat, hop out and get one and you can report back here with your impressions.

If I spent a heap of time hanging around metal towers during lightning storms I'd buy your stick as well.. But I don't. I do however spend a lot of time in water where shark sightings/ run ins are a regular occurrence. As stated above I'm certainly not any worse off with a surf safe and anything that increases the odds in my favor can't be a bad thing.
I live in an area that has deer all over the place, I see dead ones along the road almost daily.
I've got silent (to humans) deer whistles on my front bumper, they supposedly keep the deer from running out onto the road in front of you as you drive by.
People swear by them.
I've never hit a deer since using them, or before for that matter.
Do they work? Beats me.
Has anyone hit a deer with them on their car? Beats me.
Would I buy them again? Sure, they are cheap plastic.
Bottom line ~ Can't hurt, what the hell.

The same things are probably marketed here as kangaroo whistles. Similarly, I don't have one, and have never hit a kangaroo. I don't know how deer react, but I am guessing that like kangaroos, by the time they hear these and figure they need to get out of the way, it will be too late.

The subject of shark attack is now a regular conversation with my mates and I - it never used to be
I surf Wedge Island fairly often, once or twice it's been on my own. It is a great spot but somewhat isolated and as we know has had a killer shark occupy its waters.
Crayfishermen up there say they see big sharks regularly.
Although I've only seen a small tiger up there (200m away) I have had that uncomfortable feeling at times that I wasn't alone....
I've had the Surf Safe fitted to my board now.
I don't want to be in the situation out the back one day watching a large, dark shape approach and wishing I'd shelled out that paltry $500.
Placebo effect? If that's all it is then so be it. But places like Wedge and Cottesloe now are going to be a much more comfortable to surf
