What's everyone taking/took/wishes they took? And for what reasons?
I guess this this is a follow on from the fat threads.

Skeptical of all supplements as repeated studies show they give no benefit when compared to a good diet.
However this looks interesting - alivebynature.com/nicotinamide-riboside-reprograms-aging-stem-cells/

The whole issue on diets and supplements was non existent in those days when people were happy to have loaves of bread, some cheese, some over-cooked, over-killed peas, and potatoes. The Friday evening chook was a big event worthy of a song an dance routine. And people were lean and healthy. None of this "obesity" crap.
Then we got affluent. We have also become too clever and tricky for our own good. Now we can have meats of all descriptions whenever and wherever we wanted. Chooks is as easy as a short drive to the KFC, and beef and fish to MacDonalds. With the whole array of stuff on the menu, we thought it is a good idea to exclude and include certain foods in our diets.
Of course, the health gurus are having a field-day. "Try this, don't go near that". They all have they own special advice, and sadly, some of us fell for it.
Foods are not the same as we once knew. The old meaning of foods means unprocessed, or very lightly processed foods. I am talking about wholegrains, vegetables, meats, etc. Now eating breads is supposed to be bad for you because it has carbohydrate. But it is the energy we needed to function. Eating bread makes you fat. No, it is not. White bread with all the goodness stripped away is not as good as the wholegrain ones. When you consume wholegrain bread, you ingest the entire grain, with all the goodness in it. Vitamin A, B, C, D, to Z.
So my argument is this...If you eat foods with minimal processing involved, and of course the right mix, you have all and every nutrition and vitamin needed. Why then waste money to buy vitamin supplements, while at the same time eat highly processed foods?
Regarding protein powder. Yes, it does have a high amount of protein in it. However, one needs to remember that our body can ONLY absorb a certain amount of protein at any one time. Let's say 20%. So the rest of the protein simply ended up in your urine. "Pissing up the wall" takes on another meaning, innit ?
Agree with everything you said the Mr Jup.
So what about the person who eats everything they should in the correct amounts (Eg: correct calories for the day with the % of macros needed for what they are trying to achieve.) but wants to give a boost to their nutrition?
Vitamins have been proven harmful unless you are deficient which is extremely rare in the Western world.
Herbal supplements I believe have some mild benefits.
My regime includes fish oil, garlic, CoQ10, curcumin, artichoke and milk seed thistle extract.
One product that I believe is under rated is called NAC, it's an extract of shellfish and is very sulferous. It's also an actual prescription medicine used for Tylenol overdoses. Basically it's a liver and kidney tonic. I've been using it for more than 20 years, give it to the beagles also.

Yes, your body can only absorb a small proportion of it, but having it available is the important thing. If you have 100% available, and get 20%, its better than having 5% available and only getting that 5%.
I used to be skeptical of protein powder until I tried it. I used to go to the gym three times a week and the muscles I worked would be sore about three days later. So, for years I had a constant background feeling of soreness.
When I started using protein powder the pain either didn't show up at all, or dissipated quickly. The difference was amazing to me. I have been a convert ever since.
In the last 2 years I have taken up cable wakeboarding. The first few months, after a 2 hour session, my body would feel like its been runover by a truck a few days later. One of the operators there suggested protein shakes, but that all the other wakeboarders would laugh at it. So, I started using them again, and again, the pain didn't last as long, and recovery was so much better.
So, in my experience, protein powders work. Just don't try and use them before eating a meal as they fill you up and make you feel bloated.
Not really "supplements", more like the necessities of life,
Steak, bacon, roo, rabbit, pigeon, spuds, assorted vegies and salad-y stuff, a smattering of junk food every so often, Panadol osteo and voltaren.
Without any of these, I grind to a halt.

That's why they include Leuca.. Leucathineasdasdas That stuff. check the ingredients. Without it you'd **** it out in about 5 minutes.
I agree with FormulaNova's observations. Recovery is completely different using those fancy protein powders. General wellbeing seems better too. Natural highs.

I am no medical genius, nor am I a dieting guru. All my limited knowledge in this diet capers come from watching those sometimes interesting, most time boring pseudo medical programs on TV. So please don't hold me to account here.
Regarding supplements, I am led to believe that proper meals comprising of the essential common foods are more than sufficient to keep you healthy and functional. Take eating an apple or an orange for example. If you are to consume the entire fruit, skin and all, you have taken everything in that fruit, vitamin C included of course. However, if you are to avoid eating an apple, and only take vitamin C pills, and believe it is the same as eating an apple, then you are misled.
Why? Because in an apple, there are other things clever scientists still can't work out what they are. Further more, All these other substances, beside vitamin C, in that apple will enhance your health. I am talking about fibres. Fibres are essential for your gut health. It is also believed that gut bacteria plays a very important part to our general well-being, plus mental health.
It is the same with eating bread. Wholegrain breads have not only carbohydrate, but also the fibres for your guts. Eating white bread means you only have the carbohydrate, but missed out on fibres. That is why I believe unprocessed foods are the way to go.
Regarding protein powder, I also saw a doctor who actually consumed it, and then stuck a needle, a very scary long needle into his thigh muscles to measure the amount of protein before and after. Yes, he did see a huge boast of it in his blood stream. But then again, he also measured a huge amount of protein he pissed against the wall soon after too.
About protein powder helps quicker recovery. One of the doctors reckoned that it may not be such a good thing. Why? Pains and aches are signs of your muscles telling you that it needed time to recover. Depending on your fitness and age, you may recover quicker and soon back on the training again. But aches and pains are there for a reason. But overriding the signs and signals by eating other supplements like protein powder means you are ignoring them. Please don't forget there are other body parts involved too. I am talking about your skeletal structure. They also needed rest after some wear and tear.
Not meaning to discourage you guys from going out in the sun, or pumping iron in front of those giant mirrors, with admiring ladies sneaking glances at you, but please don't overdo it. A moderate dose of exercise on a regular basis is better than a large one sporadically.

When I used to do weight training, there was no chance that I could overdo it. I just wasn't physically capable of doing it. I don't think protein powder at least lets you overtrain, it just helps the recovery. Before I was using it I still trained the same amount of times a week, at the same intensity. It was just that I felt better with the protein powder, and I suspect that I built muscle more quickly.
With wakeboarding, initially you feel it in your arms, your back, and your legs. After enough sessions you build the muscles in those areas to where you can go around a lot more instead of fatiguing after a few laps of the lake. Again, protein powder just helped the recovery.
I think anyone that's serious about any of this stuff does research and figures out when and how to train. You just don't get results without working this out. You can fatigue yourself and still not build muscle.
On the other hand, my opinion is that there are a lot of steroid users out there. When you know what your own body is capable of naturally, and then you see other people, and the way they are built, it seems obvious that they are taking something.
I drink a glass of milk with a single scoop of protein powder before every sailing session. Definitely helps with muscle recovery.
Get some whey protein isolate into you straight after any sustained exercise, gym, long surf session, run. No doubt it aids recovery.
Only actual sup you need. Use a good one, the cheap ones are full of sugar and fillers. As someone else said above, I also buy the 100% natural whey protein for about 20/kg, if you go a high quality branded protein you will be paying upwards of $100 for the same amount, its a genuine rip-off and why these fitness industry supplement companies make so much coin. They also suck young kids into suggesting they will look like Arnold by taking all these "stacks" of pre-workouts, creatine, BCAA's, bulking powders etc.... Yeh nice one
The raw protein taste a bit funny has an earthy raw meat taste, but I to blend it with a Banana and it was quaffable.
Pretty much everything else is marketing BS, unless you have a diagnosed deficiency, then a doc will let you know of the few high quality sups that might help you, if you have no deficiency's you don't need anything.
I used to suffer from really bad cramps when playing footy, doc suggest I probably had a magnesium deficiency put me on a high quality magnesium sup and that fixed my cramps almost instantly.
Don't play anymore so don't take it.
