Looking at some answers here, one can see that the ol gene left over from millions of years ago, is still alive and kicking. 
That gene is the one where you see a nice looking free feed in an open space. However as you approach the free feed, you hear a rustling in the bushes and you immediately become tense and check it out 
Because if you ignore it, you and your genes are probably out of the mankind gene pool forever. 
Thus the tendency to via the old adage, if it bleeds it leads, we look up and take notice of anything that's a threat or alarming.
