So here I am scrolling through my feed; my friends are posting nice things about their life's, coordinated people are doing death defying stunts, some side chats and every couple of swipes fb butts in and shows me something horrid, like factory farms or some other form of animal/human cruelty/suffering then tries to sell me some conn/bs/light show/flappy fish/bank account.
It's like you're having a beer with friends, watching some awesome videos and then some crazy person butts in and starts talking to you about the above. fb knows I love animals and I'm loathed to hurt any living creature... so wtf! Don't do that **** you sick ****, it spoils peoples' mood. I can deal with the hawkers, but not the bad imagery.
.Yeah I know, don't use fb.It's not that easy to get all your friends from literally every inhabited continent to break their connections and join you in some other reality you don't even know.
I had zero success getting whatsapp friends on to Signal, even after fb literally said and clarified beyond doubt they had to share nearly every available interface on their phones.. with them.
So there you were having a beer with friends, and that crazy smiley face monster now says you can't talk to your friends unless you talk to them through it and let them know about every person you know. like WHAT THE ****!
Thanks for that, I now feel justified refusing to get involved from the beginning.
It's hard though, you miss out on a lot of stuff not doing facebook.
Some people only do business through their facebook page and never check their emails. The Lake George info is now on a facebook page.
I just use it to scroll through friend/family pics while on the porcelian... but it's like a mine field now, I don't you know when I'm going to see something I can't un-see.
Whatsapp is my main voice comms tool though.
Yeah that's pretty much Facebook in general. Was having a chat with a friend about something barely political then suddenly some third party comes in and starts ranting about Trump.

Yuck, then you put that thing to your mouth or let you kids play with it![]()
Can't believe how many people can't even have a **** without their phone

Not sure what your biological condition is, but nobody in my family or that I've ever heard of put their laptops/phones in their mouths...
Is this you...

They're still doing it.
Facebook has been reading msgs on whatzap too. Had a random msg exchange w a relative on a topic I never wrote about, for adds popping up later.
Cryptographed end to end my rear. If you want to keep your privacy get off FB asap and switch from Whatsapp to other msg app.

Nah, it will be crypto end to end, its just that Facebook are reading what you wrote at your end. Its not surprising really as they want to make money out of it.

How if I dont have FB?
Adds pop up in YT and browsers...from msg txt inside Whatzap
Dont bet your life or sensitive info in any of these FB controlled apps...
the worst part is that FB serves ads from fraudulent websites (this is a fact). And then if you report it, nothing happens for ages... not even that, I tried adding comments to warn users on those ads, and they get deleted. They also censor free speech. I'm really looking forward to an alternative platform that will will allow people/families to connect, without all the bulls..t that FB introduced over time.

You may not have facebook but you have whatsapp, so that's where they get the user information from. Whether they send that data to Google for their targetted ads or some webpages have facebook ads, but that's how it will work.
End-to-end crypto is easy and its easier to do this than have something in the middle interpreting what you send. It means that the data goes direct from your device to the other person's device. If you need something in the middle (if you think it can listen to your conversation) the data has to go in and out of the service providers network somewhere. Why bother, when you can get the information at each end-point anyway.
You are right though. Don't trust anything sensitive to these apps or any other commercial apps where you are not paying. If you are not paying for the program, the provider is getting their money from somewhere/something else.

Gotta agree with this. It doesn't matter what your personal views are, censorship is not a good thing.
Since FB started introducing independant fact checkers it's gone way downhill. I don't have an issue with fact checkers in general as a seperate counter to rubbish that can be easily found, but I don't agree with them having unilateral power to remove or restrict posts. In my experience the fact checkers are often far from independent and just pushing a narrative that suits thier own agenda.
Two things...
1. If you don't like an ad on your feed click on the three dots and report the ad as not appropriate or something like that. The algorithm will pick up that you don't like that stuff and will show you less of it (or keep looking at cat pictures and that's all you will get). If you look at stuff (and even just watch the thing all the way through...) the algorithm will continue to show that stuff to you.
2. I don't understand why people want to use WhatsApp or FB Messenger when a simple Text Message does the same thing... I'm not sure whether it's encrypted or not but how much of your data is that serious that no-one can see it (e.g. are you planning a terrorist act?). The bonus of this is that FB and Google and so on don't see what you're talking about at all (as it is a telco construct not a social media construct).

Yeah we had a couple of them, you know...

Yeah we had a couple of them, you know...
Yeah, we did, ....but then Laurie shut it down.
Now I don't get to argue with all my friends. Or logman.
iMessage, that's on every iPhone, is encrypted end-to-end.
Apple is excellent with privacy, and is just about to go head-to-head with FaceBook over it all. The first "little war" between two tech giants.
Apple does not need your data. FaceBook absolutely does.

And me!
I think Laurie shutdown heavy weather because he couldn't find anyone that wanted to buy the personal information. You want to sell data on people that actually buy stuff.
Except PM34. They sold all his data to the government, and then they gave it back.
