I'm not always defending Russia, but haven't we all wanted to shoot down drones at some point?

I'm not defending anything, I just find everything they are doing goes of with the wrong bang but this one I found in news articles is one that went well as many others too they say, but...they say.

Has anyone fact checked that sh!t?
We saw a SAM launch..... then a broken drone. The sort of one lots of people have. Where's the actual link?
No expert.... but that drone would not have a radar signature large enough, nor emit any heat of note, so I doubt a conventional SAM would target it. I mean, planes have to drop numerous 2000degC magnesium flares to confuse a heat guided missile.
Radar doesn't track anything that small. Even just basic logic says - Otherwise they'd have SAMs everywhere the US prezzie goes and at the Olympics, instead of investing in tons of new tech to stop the little things... ?

I call bullcrap.

Uh! You're wrong about radar and tracking small objects, domestic radar can track birds with marker bands on their legs!
Would'nt surprise me if they were to shoot down ordinary FPV surveillance drones with hand held anti air rockets.
Reasonably genuine video from the quantity of hours of studying them.
Apparently nothing can communicate to the Russians , they're in their own little space ship.

I think Markie is talking about the old school radar from many years ago.
High-resolution radars are specifically designed for drone detection and tracking.

Given that a bit of the Russia equipment seems to be based on really old tech, I wonder how likely it is that they have missiles that can target drones. Being able to see a bird with something that reflects radar from a stationary point is one thing, but is it as easy when you are moving at hundreds of kms per hour and need to hit it? I suspect that the size of a target makes it easier to hit it, but a drone would be a pretty hard target.

Sure, the video looked okay, but editting together a sequence does not mean that it happened that way.

What are the Ukranians using drones for anyway? Surveilance? They are relatively cheap so you would think that they can just deploy more and eat up the missile supply. Heck, you may as well deploy dozens of the cheap ones and make them use up all their weapons... that is if they can actually target them.

Hard to tell from the video if this consumer drone you can buy on Amazon for 5k was downed by a direct explosive hit from a surface to air military missile designed to blow up war planes or if it flew into a tree.

I could just as easily put together a video like that showing I shot down a MiG with a rubber band.

I think missiles are meant to detonate rather than just run into things, so I would expect that a genuine 'hit' would have exploded more than a rotor or two.

My best guess is that a missile gets close to its target then detonates, given the small window in time you have to destroy something.

Yes - as 50 fist sizes holes will down a plane better than a poor hit that just takes off a control surface and it may still fly. It wont fly with many small problems....

That also made me wonder as the drone damage does not seem significant enough for a few kg of HE and the resultant shrapnel

lol, agreed,
the vid simply says they shot down a drone,
it didnt say with a SAM or a tank or anything else they showed as filler in the vid.

Some of the above posters should work for 60mins with their reading things into the story.
Can radar track a drone???? Yes it can. High-resolution radars are specifically designed for that.

The drone was probably shot down by a hand weapon for all we know.
I saw a bird in the vid as well, maybe it was a bird strike
Or maybe the drone made a joke about GI Jane in front of Will and he slapped it down.

FormulaNova. What are the Ukranians using drones for anyway? Surveilance?

Turkey had a military drone they developed and produced they donated to Ukraine.
