I bought a cheap smart media player to connect my old television to the NBN called a Laser MMC-B15. It doesn't really do a very good job so I want to replace it with something that does. I can see a few devices advertised on eBay. Anybody here got any reports on whether they work?

chromecast with a half decent phone or tablet.. that way anything you download or want to stream will play. have heard drivers are issue for off the shelf units.

I have an mxq pro with kodi pre installed. I love it. Cost about $65 on ebay with a little keyboard which is brilliant.

How doesn't it do a very good job? It says on its own site "The LASER MMC - B15 set top box is a great media player". It sounds great.

Don't beat around the bush. Chromecast or Apple TV.

And don't be put off by "Apple". It's a Unix based operating system with all the bells and whistles.

It is slow to load and gets pixellated for a few secs at the beginning of a programme or whenever an ad breaks the show on SBS. I tried updating the SBS app and it gets even worse...the picture freezes while the sound goes on. Chromecast uses a phone, I think, and I maintain the resistance. So my choice appears to be between a smart media player and a smart TV. All the TVs seem to have widely spaced feet, so I'd need a new table for the telly as well. And I'd have a TV going to waste before its time is done, so a smart media player that works is my preferred option

have you got a cable connection or via wifi?
i have the apple tv and its the internet connection that is choking it. Otherwise really happy with it. Also a movie from a laptop via wifi then wifi to the apple tv chokes all the time.
maybe time for you to get a newer tv

Apple TV.
Just got the new one and it's unreal. Literally grab the remote (with TV off) and hit the voice button and say "find Billions". Magically the tv turns on and Billions is ready to play by the time i'm on the couch. I love the damn thing.
