Hi,
Has anyone had to have shoulder surgery? I have tears full and partial and cysts (ewww!) and fluid in my shoulder. How did you find the recovery time and how long did you have to stay in hospital for? Any info appreciated :).
Recovery feels like takes friggin ages and be prepared for some pain and to be immobilized. 6 weeks recovery, 3 weeks back to work and 3 months to full capacity given you do your physio & exercises properly. Then once recovered continue with shoulder exercises and strengthening. And speaking to others never as original.
Good luck Meg112,
Last year early in the year, right shoulder full tear (63mm) to subscapularis and rupture of long head bicep. Hospital 2 days and full 4 months recovery. now better and stronger than ever. do exactly what the surgeon says and you be fine.
3 months ago rupture to long head bicep on left shoulder, he is not fixing this as he says it will just rupture again and it only contributes 7% of strength.
Get a good surgeon and physio and do what they say.

Some pain? Man I never knew hurt could hurt so much.
Hi guys,
Thanks for the input, I see my surgeon on the 6th of March, does anyone know if once your rehabilitated the pain goes away or is it something that never feels 100% again. I have one full and one partial tear and apparently numerous cysts and fluid around one joint and being of the just stick a bandaid on it and mecurochrome fixes everything family I have just ignored this injury and soldiered on for three years. I've only just gotten on to pain meds and for the first time in I can't remember when can sleep without pain, funny thing is it feels so weird I can't sleep!!
Pain does go if you do the right thing and strictly follow instruction. Can't stress that enough. But the usual thing as we get older there are aches and pains come and go but nothing compared to what you are possibly experiencing now. We all start off as social butterflies then due to aging we slowly become moths. Some people make a better recovery than others and that is due to the variables such as injury type, extend and rehab. I know people who have not followed instruction and they still have issues and others are fine. Myself, i have a tear and some other ****e going on (avoiding surgery) but i'm able to live with it because following instruction from surgeon and physio. I now have full range again and no pain.
Good luck, just another chapter in your book of life. You'll come out at the other end honky dory
i find i do get days where it hurts but not anywhere near what it did pre op . i have lived with the immense pain for many many years until it finally let go . Kids just jumped on my shoulder tonight playing and that deffo hurt . But i find changes in the weather are when it aches a little , or when i have pushed my weights a little too hard

Hi Meg,
I had stuffed up both shoulders coming back to windsurfing after 28 years out and thinking, stupidly, that I could probably do at 60 what I had done at 30 or so.
One stormy, gusty arvo I managed to get a severe ligament tear R shoulder and partial tear in the L. I couldn't lift anything above shoulder height without pain and couldn't get into a comfortable position in bed at night.
I had decompression via arthroscope and open surgery for the R ligament repair and only needed decompression surgery via arthroscope on the L. I was in hospital only overnight and needed almost no pain relief post-op. No swelling and uneventful healing. Obviously I had to have 2 separate operations.
Had to stop sailing and squash for minimum 4 months but the surgeon strongly advised I take 6 months out before loading things.....he wasn't too happy that my sports are windsurfing and squash!!!!
I've had a full and complete recovery and get no pain at all and am back to normal in my strength and range of motions.
I did a great deal of research when choosing my surgeon and , unusually for me, I was very cooperative in my post-op rehabilitation.
All the best and I hope all the planets align.
