Women have been saying it for years. Usually in regards to mental health. Most of us blokes have heard it, "where's the credit card? I need to destress", or "I need to go get my fix". Personally I've never understood it ![]()
But is shopping good for your physical health.?
Unlike my wife, I haven't gotten into the 'Fitbit' craze and religiously count my steps, but I do have a step counting thingy on my phone. So out of interest, I monitored what it takes step wise for me to get from the carpark to my work place. It averages 3100 steps (return) and I do it in just under the recommended 30 min of daily walking recomended (yes I do do it at a rate that slightly elevates my heart rate because often it's the only chance I get of any excercise).
Yesterday, I did my walk to work and back, logged the typical 3100 steps then jumped in the car and went to Bunnings. I knew what I was after and I knew roughly where to find it (I did wonder around the paint section a bit). I was after only 2 items that where only a few isles apart. When I came out, I checked my phone and I had done 5000 steps. So that was nearly 2000 steps whilst in Bunnings.
So I concluded that shopping is good for you and if you were to 'browse' you would feel even more benefit. And if I really wanted to, I could've walked across the road to the Tavern and really been in front....
Disclaimer- This post was intended to be tongue in cheek. My opening paragraph was in no way intended to make light of the serious
issues surrounding mental health.
Thank Toph, I think a little bit of silliness is good for the soul on a Friday afternoon.
I think the down side to shopping is dealing with the 'crew' at hardware stores. Gone are the days where you would speak with the crusty old bloke who would tell you how to fix things and send you away with the 17 screws that you will need. Now you have to youtube the job then go to the mega shop and buy a packet of 500 screws... I now have 38 packets of screws with about 467 in each packet. I will now look for a task that will fit the supplies I have collected over the years. Whatever I build, it will certainly be well fastened.
However there are some health benefits as I can often feel my heart rate increasing when I listen to a 'valued crew member' pointing me to a product that they have never used themselves. oops, think I just blew a valve.
Disclaimer: I rarely know what I'm taking about.
