I don't actually know anyone who thinks this is a good idea but apparently some people do, according to the media.
Are they serious??
PS; Keep it nice; just a discussion, not an argument ![]()
If they do then as soon as the mining economy bottoms out again we can watch them grovel back to the rest of the nation for another bigger slice of gst ![]()
Parochialism, Ignorance, Vanity and Selfishness = Secession
When the times are good here, why not?
Pandemic is showing the True Colors of many people and the picture is not pretty. Its been great actually for me to re-evaluate who is around me and friends.
Managed so far to cross off many from future BBQ invitation lists.
It wasn't a sure thing for WA to join with the other states on federation
WA was going to go it alone like NZ did. However, the mining industry had a down turn and so choose to become part of the Australian Federation.
I think people in WA are a bit limited in their view of the rest of the country, but then again I think the people on the east coast are a bit ignorant of the west as well. There is such a physical distance and little interaction.
I have heard things in WA recently that I thought were funny. Someone thought that people on the east coast travel up and down the coast from Vic to Qld all the time, but in reality a lot of people don't do this.
Someone else was telling me that Covid19 wasn't as big a problem in WA because 'people here are smarter and behave better'. No they aren't, there is just less population density in most places.
Secession? Why not just call it out and wait for the east coast to invade and take the Pilbara as their booty? Maybe separate the Pilbara and any other mineral rich areas and call it the state of Palmer?
Having seen the media in both places recently I think everyone in Australia just thinks about their little area and if its doing well, they want to go it on their own. If they aren't they are happy to be part of the same nation.
Imagine if WA did secede? You would get all the shonky people migrate there to skim whatever they can from the state. Not something I would encourage. WA should enjoy its place in the country as it is now and be happy with it being a nice place to live.
already tried once. although it was a resounding 'yes' the uk parliament refused to accept the vote: www.sro.wa.gov.au/parliament/topic/westralia-shall-be-free-western-australian-secession

And this guy tried too, of course.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Hutt_River
Going by that opinion, not really smarter or better behaved at all.
I can see the argument when WA makes all the coin then doesn't get its fair share back
But really, how would WA survive without the collective support in other areas... thinking Centrelink, NDIS, Fed Police / Fed airports corp, military, national phones/interwebs infrastructure geez the list must be huge.
Its too late now to just change.
Oh it's never too late. Why not give it a go?
You really want to create MORE politicians?
The land and it's wealth belongs to all Australians I mean all the Australian bankers I mean all the international bankers I mean ....
Thing is over here is Western Aus we dont rely on people to do the right thing cause quite frankly People (certain minorty)dont do the right thing `do they?

I think there's a bar somewhere in Perth (or there was at one point) with WA secession as a theme. If my memory serves me correctly it was a news story about that bar that first led me to the Wikipedia page.
