A must watch,.. I'm a long way from green but this was a massive eye opener to commercial fishing. Speechless..... Phucking humans
I got halfway through it and wouldn't continue because it is so depressing.
Humans are really a dumb lot on the path to self destruction.
Used to work for the office of the Great Barrier Reef, called the fisheries department one day to ask whether they would considering lowering quotas since the reef (hatchery) had seen a series of large bleaching events.
nah mate, someone'd kick my arse if I even suggested it
This popped up on KF. You think that documentary is depressing? Don't read the article in that thread about what the Chinese fishing fleets are up to then :(
Problem was, even after watching it I couldn't see it changing.
2050 was a scary number, made it way more real than the global warming being so soon.
I watched it last night too by chance- interesting film. A bit concerning but will be hard to see it changing much. Everyone is too financially corrupt or vested.
That whale scene 'the grind' was pretty grim
Trying not to watch it. I knew a guy a long time ago that was a helicopter pilot for the big tuna boats. He said it was a massacre.
The photos in the cafes in some of the islands in the Med of giant tuna by the hundreds.
What happened in the Grand banks with Cod.
We will never learn.
Like everything as long as we keep buying it companies will keep selling it.
Who is to blame? The big companies? The little fish and chip shops? Or the dude eating his 2 salmon sushi's?

Government's that subsidize fishing fleets that would otherwise fail financially
Probably the best solution is to have around 1/3rd of the ocean off limits. In the end this would benefit the fishing companies, but there'll always be the guy that wants to make his quick buck today not matter what the consequence.
So, maybe the question is what needs to happen for this to get the press coverage that climate change has?
As someone whos family has been in the fishing industry for a long time i can tell you this. Australia has one of, if not the most sustainable commerical fishing industries in the world. Its third world countries who dont do enough to manange there industries. Thats why it is important to buy our beautiful local seafood instead of the filthy inported sh_t from asia. As they say "Good seafood is not cheap, Cheap seafood is not good".

Not wrong about the china fleet mate. I big worry at the moment is china using the phillipines/ new guinea's rights to the torress straight prawn trawl fishery.

Was that the tuna fleet down SA? I think they do tuna farming now and have strict quota to follow so these days i would assume bluefin tuna stocks should be recovering.

Do you mean 1/3 of the each indutries fishing grounds? Would that be the most productive third or least productive third?
I reckon a better solution would be to enforce quota's, effort and monitoring.
For example here in australia we have "Vessel Monitoring System" or VMS this shows a commerical vessels live positon, speed and other realitive information. We also have strict quota as another example the tuna longlining up here in queensland is carefully monitored through VMS and quota. If a boat tries to offload more than there quota you are gonna get your arse handed to you buy fisheries. Hundrede of thousands in fines to boat owner, skipper and crew along with having your license taken off you.
we are in the poo with China now, why not make it worse and start using their illegal fishing boats in our waters for our navy patrol boats to use as target practice.
Trouble is China flew under the radar too bloody long and now has such a control over the world.
I think there is something in the bible about end times and great wrath and war coming from the east. When I was a ung un we all thought it was Vietnam... close but no cigar.

Not wrong they have us by the balls big time. I reckon the only reason they dont take us over tommorow is america.

Would you really want to take over places like Aus? Where would your market be then? Its one thing to want to invade another country, but what do you do once you have it? Just make more of the stuff you already have? In my opinion, China still needs a market for all its goods, so taking it over doesn't help much.
We would still all be here.
They do sell to there own population as well.
I don't think they would be to worried about losing us as a market.
Considering the gains to be had .
I think they would be more worried about having to fight us we have a long very proud history of going balls out .
In every conflict we have been in we have held off massively overwhelming forces with just a few not for some political ideology but for the simple fact of Australian life you go all out not to let your mates down and every one who lives here when push comes to shove is your mate .

Im sure china still has plenty of buyers apart from straya. We got massive amounts of land, farms, thriving seafood industried. We also have our famous mines, mining iron ore, nickle, aluminium, copper, silver, uranium, diamond, opal, zinc, coal, oil shade, petrol, natural gas. When you think about it what havent we got?
We have a population of 25 million (approx) they have a population of 1.4 billion (approx). Have a look at there military and power. The only reason we are still here is our allies such as america. Besides they dont want to start a world war. They will just contiue to buy up Australia anyway. Have a look at Keswick island they have locked everyone out.
Sorry for the thread drift
EDIT: meant to quote FN
China don't need to invade AUS when we have politicians that give it away for much less than what a military campaign would cost.
I watched the documentary
none of the fishing practices are carried out in Australia so that's good, we live in the best country in the world
but yes deplorable actions and yes we don't have a bright future in regards to worldwide fisheries.
killing dolphins and whales = bad and yes it pulls on your heart strings but there literally is more dolphins and whales and seals now than anytime from 1800-1950 this also is why there is soooo many sharks again
the tuna thing yep they cooked the chook on that one not good
The one that really got me though is the plastic, that's what's really got us ****ed.
oil, plastic, rubbish, pollution, fertiliser run off, polluted rivers, loss of habitat, dredging, marinas , groynes...... but a lot of that was not mentioned
yes fishing takes fish away from the sea and reduces numbers but in most countries it's the adult fish that are taken by fishing boats,,, it's all the above that destroys fish nurseries and destroys reef and coral that's costs generation of generation of juvenile fish to be destroyed before reaching a couple of centimetres long...
Many fish have 10,000 or more eggs for this reason but when the place they give birth or lay them is silted up with the reef destroyed and getting acidic runoff from sewage and fertiliser run off that cuts down fish populations pretty quick smart....

Reduce world population!!!!!!!
Too many mouths to feed - profit drives small and large fishing companies
Sustainability versus self interest- guess which wins

Reduce world population, Great Idea!
So your offering yourself and your family first then?
Years ago i read a speech to the shareholders and board by one of the world's largest fishing companies (Japanese). They said that the world's fish resources are not finite and will run out. So the more they can catch immediately to get their share the better.
Also their attitude was if they could reduce overall numbers of Tuna, their stock on hold, would therefore increase astronomically in value. ![]()

you first moron
Hopefully China has learnt its historical lessons (and my guess is they have). Germany now pretty much controls Europe financially and that was after losing two expensive world wars.
There will always be master rulers - big Fcks small.
whether it be the romans, the British, the Americans, it doesn't really matter. We just get on with. Living then dying.
I suspect They will do it via technological advancement and of course economically. Maybe a swuirmish here and there.
But they have long term vision and military based war is not ideal for that.
Personally I see a change of guard. America's dead man walking. The final nail in the coffin will be the inevitable collapse of their dollar. Their currency as the worlds base standard currency is long over due (Bretton woods 1945 - it's the longest running currency in modern history) and they just keep printing more money which equals debt ultimately.
We had better start getting used to the idea.

surely you would take over the top bit with all the raw materials and use the desert to keep us out. then i realised thats the bit that they are buying
