The look on her face when she is told about being a good girl so Santa will deliver presents is priceless. This 'magic' for her is incredible. I would never take that away from her, although I have to admit I get as much fun from teasing her about Santa not bring her presents if she is naughty.

Funny that! The 2 young girls next door were playing in their backyard so loudly at about 6.30am this morning. Giggling and jumping around on their cubby house, enough to wake me up but then i heard my neighbour tell them that santa said they have to be quieter and next minute i hear a loud "sorry" and our names over the fence

Yesterday i got a new car and my mate got a new kayak so told his kids that santa came early for us and they never questioned it LOL

If all goes well this will be my last Christmas without kids, going to be so much fun in a few years time

The part I struggle with as a parent, is why would I want to spend my hard earned money on presents for my kids and then give some fat bloke all the credit?

GROWING UP we got one present from santa and the rest from mum and dad. the santa present was average! Mum and dad gave the best presents.
We have done the same, although I try and make the santa presents a bit better. Elbeau I totally get where you're coming from.
Our kids start out perfect and then we do a lot of the corruption ourselves by being human, having double standards, saying one thing and doing another etc.
The more vigilant and true and self disciplined you can be with your childeren the better

and steak and BJ day IS REAL!

I think that the whole concept of Santa teaches kids a valuable lesson:

"Question things that you hear, if they don't make sense"

If you only tell kids the truth, always, then they might grow up being just a bit more gullible don't you think?

If my kids find out that they've been lied to about santa, then perhaps that might teach them to question other things that people tell them.

At least that's my excuse for spoiling them rotten at Christmas time

I posted the same disclosure about Santa on facebook. Here is a reply from one of my children who is now an adult. "I'm so glad you took this route. I felt honored to know the truth from the start. It has also, now as an adult, helped me to ask hard questions and look for the truth in all of life. Thank you!"

I'm sort of joking, but what else are they going to say? 'Dad, you ruined our lives and stole Santa from us, and we have turned out too unemotional?'?

If you have treated your kids well, they are going to be okay with whatever decisions you made regardless.

Kids always learn about Santa, but no one has lasting problems from it, its just a part of growing up. It is easy to forget that as a kid, things hiding under the bed can be a reality.

There is no truth behind Christmas. There is no jesus, there is no virgin mary who had a child without having sex, there is no holy spirit and there are no wise men on camels.. I hope you told them that as well. It's all a made up story by people who need a reason to celebrate their imaginary friend. Steak and BJ day and talk like a pirate day are no different. Just made up days.

Also rudolf is either make believe or a transgender reindeer. When i was feeding reindeer in the wilds of Alaska just recently, i learnt that males don't have antlers at christmas time. Another hole in the story!

But put all that real world crap aside, i loved my dad staying up late with me waiting for santa to arrive and telling me stories about how he saw him and even gave santa his beer(!) after i fell asleep. Kids have got to be kids and I can't wait to have those special moments with mine

I've always felt sorry for Brendan the Brown Nosed Reindeer

He was just as quick as Rudolf but didn't have the same stopping power

Perhaps they (The Elves) should have put him up front

Teach your kids in the Spirit of Santa. My daughter was gutted when she eventually found out he wasn't real. She immediately said she didn't want her little bro to know the truth. But we talked about what christmas is about, we agreed that yes we buy pressies and credit that gift to Santa, but in SPIRIT, Santa is real. Because he lives in all those kids who believe, and all those parents who indulge the illusion
To see my kids now indulge the same gift to their cousins, the excitement they share with them , IMHO Santa is still just as alive as he ever was

Kids are just that kids, they don't need to grow up so fast and as parents i can not understand why we are such a hurry to steal their innocence? They will have the rest of their lives to not believe

I must emphasise my kids loved Christmas and Easter etc. The bonus was they KNEW the truth. I certainly want to know the truth of things. Don't you?

Sorry elbeau, but you miss the point completely as do most self-professed non-believers.

The true joy of kids and Santa is when they realise what is going on and the cheeky looks from them around others. I hope that you didn't spoil this moment with your kids by 'preaching' truth and common sense to them.

Kids need to develop their own grip on reality, it shouldn't be forced upon them - neither should a false belief.

Our family enjoys Christmas with our families, presents, Christmas tree decorations and Santa. My eldest (11yo) gives me a wry smile when Santa is mentioned... that look alone is priceless and provides me with the knowledge that he is using his intelligence, his sense of humour and that he knows that I know.

I couldn't think of anything more boring than lecturing my kids on what (I believe) is real and what is fiction.

I have friends with this view also. They still play the Santa card, but have gifts from them also. And I think they label the good gifts from them.
Fair enough if that's how they feel.

I don't think you have to lie to your kids about these things, but just because you're not diving deep into the lie doesn't mean you're denying them the joy of the spirit of something. Seems some folk have very hard line interpretations of the options in life. Ease up, what we call Christmas has been celebrated in lots of guises and by many cultures totally unrelated to Christianity, Santa etc. We have snippets of a few of these in our current traditions. What is wrong with celebrating a tradition for tradition sake, that allows for knowledge of the truth, enjoyment of the event and a damp tasty feed of various things.

Now, help please; I was never taught about steak day, when is it?

I HATE the idea of the commercialism of Halloween
but I am not about to stop giving out boiled lollies to
children in the Innocent few years they have, with their feelings of a joy and high expectation of
getting dressed up and enjoying a real buss on hallows night

That would be just bar humbug....
These littlies do not know any better...
and life becomes crap all to soon......

A few years of joy and expectations can not hurt anyone,
and that goes for agnostic easter and Xmas (my 2 cents worth)

To see amazement and joy on littlies faces just makes you feel good and the world for awhile becomes a better place

Agree gypsy, must add that I don't think you need to propagate a tradition beyond calling it a tradition though. My 2 cents worth is that enjoying a tradition is no less magical than being told to believe fiction. True imagination involves the knowledge that something isn't quite real.

^^^ that was my point also, watching the excitement in my 4yo's eyes whilst her big brother plays on her imagination. I expect that many of the 'non-believers' also like to spoil magic shows by offering their logic behind the illusion.

Don't worry folks, kids work out what is real and what isn't soon enough and I'm sure that my kids won't resent me allowing them a few years of believing in the magic of Santa.

You never know, one day I might even receive a social media comment like the OP's... but instead saying "thanks dad for allowing us that little piece of joy when we were young."
