Plenty of universal products around for A/C remotes, dont ask me about phones no idea.

Why you paid $75 for a remote:

" I have always had a power monitor running and find that my Samsung split system draws up to 120 watts on standby. With Brisbane's power costs now at 29 cents per kWh, that is a cost of $254.00 per year just to have it on standby"

I expect user error re: phone

most A/c units have a 'sump heater' on the compressor to keep a constant temperature on the compressor itself when the unit is off, to ensure the refrigerant and the lubricating oil are seperated, otherwise when the unit is started both oil and refrigerant can be pumped causing damage to the compressor components. Its more important in colder climates then warm, however i have seen a compressor 'hydraulic' on commisioning in the tropics because the sump heater wasnt employed prior to start up.
