I thought that was a description that conveyed the fact it has a massive prize and a great many people stop for half an hour to watch it. Less, but still a lot stop for maybe an hour or two to have lunch at work and a tipple.
I had no idea that some actually stop, completely. I can't get a part for a Holden as they all had the day off today.
WTF!!????
Australia needs to grow the fk up and realise not everything is about drinking p!ss, a free day off and gambling.
How sad. FFS it is a horse race.
The irony of me not being able to get a HOLDEN part cos Vic had a day off, and we bemoan the loss of Holden and Ford local manufacturing would be hilarious if it were not affecting real people's jobs n stuff. But really.......
OMG, do you ever stop whinging.
You poor thing, you have to wait 1 day longer for a part, boo hoo, 3rd world problems suck hey. But at least we can vent it on social media. lol
You bag out all great Aussie sports and traditions (our customs? lol) , like Aussie rules, Rugby League, cricket, public holidays and now the Melbourne Cup ???
Or are you just jealous you didnt get a day off.??
Relax a bit dude, you should have chucked a sickie and had the day off and enjoyed the day like the rest of Australia.
I think it is clear you need to take the "Australia" out of "Mark Australia",
and change it to, "Mark Whinging Pom". lol
^^ it is not a day, it delays things basically a week as u can't order on Monday arvo ... you know what, nevermind as you just don't get it.
Firstly it isn't whinging to put forward that we should not all have a day off for a horse race, when we have the most public holidays of anyone and then complain our manufacturing is dying. Do u care if Australia is great? If you think chucking a sickie is the way to go it seems you don't care about our nation - now who is un-Australian" you need to grow up also.
Secondly public holidays are usually for stuff like ANZAC, Australia Day, Queens Birthday etc etc. So a horse race huh? Albeit the longest or whatever it is... no thanks.
Please tell me you believe should we also have a public holiday for the world's longest desert car race we have, or the Sydney to Hobart that has some other record etc etc? You tell us where to draw the line? That would be engaging in the debate instead of having a crack at the man. Oh hang on..... you just don't get that either do ya
BTW in the interest of banter with the Mensa candidate ..... I think you meant "1st world problems", nor 3rd, when you tried to take the piss.
No I get it, you live in WA, so 3rd world problems, lol,
didnt think I would have had to explain the joke. Aussie sarcasm dude.
All good dude, just always hear you non stop bagging out every Aussie sport the rest of us are proud of.
OMG, are you telling me you have never chucked a sickie to go enjoy a good seabreeze?????
I have no interest in the race personally, but I reckon it's cool that Viccos get a day off for a horse race!
Hell jealous!
^^^^I think that vid of the girl in the blue dress might be Mark Pommie, flew over to the Melbourne cup to show his anger that he couldnt get his car part over night cause of some stupid horse race thingie was on.
Thought the topic was about the great race. Well l backed a donkey.just have to wait for next year.red cadeaux you did me proud the previous 3 cups.
If we're going public holidays for Australian sporting events then my vote is for the Boxing Day test.
All five days (well the four we don't already get)

I think it used to be where people lost an hour or two at the most, but yesterday I saw a lot of people just vanish.
I guess things have changed, and I was a bit surprised myself.
If watching a horse running around in circles gets you excited, then you need to take a long hard look at yourself,I'm with mark on this one, you'll not see any of our oversease competitors in the car manufacturing taking days off here and there,no wonder we won't have any car related manufacturing by 2017, queens birthday ,the poms don't get a day off for that

Wronggggggggg, try getting a part any place near Chinese new year from any place in Asia. Good luck with that. Not only do the suppliers stop packing to send, the blasted couriers wont get them to airports to fly. Not even from the old Singa. 30 years in industry and each year was more pronounced that the last with supply chain stoppage.
However it is frustrating as Mark indicated, and its not only Holden, its a stack of other suppliers as well.
While on the soap box, what is real frustrating is the crap suppliers still pander to is "oh it takes 14-21 days to ship from east to west or west to east". Rubbish, its 3-5 days by road with all products. Then the suppliers have the gall to place outrages shipping cost for that luxury, indicating you are paying priority shipping.
So next time you want parts, tell them, if its a small item, airfreight bag please (between 15-30 dollars) and its here over night, sort of.
Pfft - WA whingers...you guys are just jealous.
I'm sure that you enjoy your 'Western Australia Day' public hol though? As for the big nag race, I'm sure that there are many Viccos that are interested - (I'm not, but I took most the day off...just 'coz I can!)
ACT have 'Canberra Day', NT - 'Picnic Day', SA - 'Proclamation Day', Tassie with '8 hours day' (WTF?)
Let's get rid of all P/Hol's I reckon, it makes on difference to me...
...I'm a self-employed sole-operator!
No I get it, you live in WA, so 3rd world problems, lol,
didnt think I would have had to explain the joke. Aussie sarcasm dude.
Lol,
just sprayed a little coffee on my keyboard!
Put on place $10 and got $260 back. I picked up a winner just guessing who would make a greater story for the media. don't you folks think its rigged.
^^^
Why only bet $10 if you've worked it out?
call it a trial
will go big next year. so watch this space

Wroooooongeeeerr , my Chinese take away is never closed, on a customer service note, I've lived in numerouse countries (7) and find the Aussies slack at customer service, maybe it just their way, it's an easy life here and it transmits to buisness, nothing like a good recession to sort the crap from the cream
Deregulated trading hours have eroded the 40 hour week, and family time on the weekends has all but gone except for the lucky ones who still get a weekend.
Your lust for instant gratification, and your apparent laziness in not planning your purchases ahead of time, has f%€ked up life for families. Gone are the days when you could take the Mrs to watch the kids play sport on the weekend.
We only get 10 public holidays a year. Give some a break if they want to take a day off to watch the races and get pissed.
So you had to wait another 24 hours for a car part? boo hoo
Maybe you should have ordered it the day before.
Europeans get way more days off than us.
Im not sure if this video works, if it does I'm not sure how long it will stay on SB
I found it on Dave Hughes Page..

. Gone are the days when you could take the Mrs to watch the kids play sport on the weekend.
True...but so are the days when the average Joe couldn't afford to take the family to Bali for a holiday once a year, and house with airconditioning, two cars and all the rest of the super-consumer shiit.
You can't have it all unfortunately.
It's called progress, but maybe that's not the right word...
I wish we could all go back to simpler times,
I was never there but the 70s seems nice, less crowds, empty line up. awesome cars, no globalisation, social media...
i dont know many people who actually do 40 hours or less a week anymore. this week ill do 84 at least.......I know its only a horse race but, itsa great part of our culture, weve only being here a couple hundred years so it is something we should all be proud of.
but earthlings being earthlings always tend to ruin it for themselves.
i remember watching it at school as a grommet and to be honest was one of those things ya always remember. Hopefully those who didnt get totally ratfaced got to have a good meal and a laugh with friends family kids
even the company i work at put it on tele and ran a sweep, and believe me they arnt one for letting productivity slide.. keeps us all human, Personally i reckon every second week should be a four day week, might actually help society if we all were a bit less stressed![]()

edit, just saw a few posts down you bagging out our Wallabies team
, do you back any Aussie sports and traditions at all ??
What sort of a self-proclaimed Australian doesn't at least accept sports and holidays? Let alone like them.
Sheesh, as much as I don't even watch any sports I at least accept it as an integral part of Australian culture. Ditto holidays and 'chucking a sicky'. Who the hell doesn't like holidays?
Watch out for Border Force mate, they might send you to Nauru.

I recall an article where the journalist went on a tour of Greece and Italy with a Chinese tour group. The guide was pointing out "the lazy Italians enjoying coffee and the view instead of working. How will they achieve economic growth? Ha ha ha!"
Not sure which is worse; being unemployed in Greece or committing suicide from being overworked in a Chinese factory.
