Pretty much just use a phone for the basics but currently looking into GPS apps for recording sailing speed, watching the thread on personal locator beacons / Eperbs for obvious safety reasons. If I decide to go down this path I am thinking I would get a waterproof phone cover with earphones for listening to music as well. My question is, can I use a app (GPS) and listen to music at same time ? Currently have iPhone 5 but would consider buying android.

The music app runs in the background of the majority of other apps I believe. Although I don't have personal experience with using a GPS app and listening to music, I don't reckon you would have any issues.

Go to the gps and speed forum, there's a couple of threads devoted to the logit app for speed sailing. and yes you can listen to music and listen to your speed at the same time

Next question. Downloaded a free phone tracker app, deleted after one day because it sucks to much battery and can't be switched of. Anyone know of a gps phone tracker app that can be switched of and only used when required ? Guess they work out in the ocean or do they require google maps to work?

You can download the Navionics app for free. It only the maps you have to pay for but $20 for the whole of Aus and NZ is pretty cheap.

I am fairly sure you can run a music app in the background.
