I have NBN with Optus, and since the storms on the weekend, I've got NBN speed of 0.1-0.2 Mbps. Since I telecommute to San Francisco everyday, it's a freaking nightmare!

How can it take a WEEK to fix a problem? They rebuild storm damaged transmission lines in half the time.

I can't even look at the funny images thread!!!

How widespread is this problem? Is it all over Sydney, or is it only my suburb (St George area)?

I imagine it takes a week because yours is not the only case...

They don't need to address each household individually. There's a problem affecting the whole area. Happens regularly, but usually takes about 2 hours to fix. A couple of days might be understandable if the recent rain caused a lot of problems. A week seems particularly excessive. Considering the reliance on the internet that we now have, there needs to be more response capability.

I imagine its only your area or anywhere else that they cheaped out and went fttn. The copper could be the original from when they installed the phone. I got lucky with that and they ran a new lead in for me a few years ago, but the original cable was well past its use by date.

Buy a prepaid sim and use that til they fix it. At least you know its not an Optus problem and a general NBN one.

More like using ancient cable plant instead of new copper or fiber.

Yep, that's what I'm doing....works great until about 7am when everyone in the area wakes up and starts doing the same. And 12 hours a day of constant usage is racking up the GB!!

Same over northside, although we don't get NBN til Apr-Jun!!
Telstra have an issue so have redirected through Optus and I'm getting 1.11Mbps download and 0.05 upload.
Should be fixed by 25 Feb .

Thinking of running Cat6 cable from house to the node/pit in footpath prior to NBN.
Waddayareckon?

Big sympathy...
JIC... When it comes to tech' feedback - recommend WHIRLPOOL.NET.AU....
I have dropped paying for a back-up DONGLE (8+ years) because the NBN has become stable and solid -- ahhh..
I did not think the tolerance would be there in an optic fibre system to keep speeds that low.. must be massive leak / shorting somewhere..
But then again the amount of astonishing technical hoops incorporated into the current NBN to keep the patchwork of technologies working ... who knows...
Hope dries out fast..

I'm on cable, BTW. I thought that shouldn't be affected by the rain? And explain this to me.... download 0.1Mbps, upload 18.0 Mbps. Weird, huh?!

When I was on copper, I had no internet for 3 days every time it rained.

Good news: That is fine for using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).
Source: Have been RDP'ing since 2002.

If you watch your actual usage, through something like Little Snitch, you'll see that remote desktopping uses a dribble of bandwidth. 100-200Kbps is actually more than enough.

Here's someone saying something about it:

techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/enterprise-mobility-security/top-10-rdp-protocol-misconceptions-8211-part-1/ba-p/246707

"For instance, if you just run a line of business app with basic graphics and not much animation you may end up sending just a few Kbps of bandwidth down the wire."

And here's a pretty diagram:

That's in Kbps.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Had the exact same problem last week. I turned it (all) off and on again.

The weekend rain knocked out our frail phone line and as a result our ADSL connection died. Today I've signed up to a NBN connection through an ISP. The connection will be made Friday next week. The modem/router they provided has a 4G SIM card supplied and inserted. We are using this 4G service now and it's not too bad.

No need, the repeated power outages have been doing that for me.

But yes, have done it a couple of times a day since then. The problem is still listed for my area on the Optus website. I'm not looking for an answer, just having my entitled whinge.

I do a lot video conferencing and screen sharing across multiple continents simultaneously. It's definitely not up to the task. I've had to switch to audio only, and send slides and screen shots ahead of the call. Extremely inefficient. To operate as a live 'virtual office' across the globe, you need to be able to do this stuff continuously with multiple screens.

Do you actually know how the cable network looks between your house and the fibre node? There are probably a whole number of places it could be f'ed up. It's not necessarily as simple as you think (although, maybe it is, and its an issue of resourcing or incompetence).

I have only just had power restored after a tree took down power lines on Sunday. 5 days without power has made everyone in this house very grumpy. Sydney is a mess this week. It's crap. It's frustrating. There are still heaps of people without power.

I work remotely also. I know the frustration of crappy broadband. I'm on Optus Cable. "Mostly OK" is how I would describe that. Perfectly fine for general household usage. At 1.5Mbps upstream, totally crap-tastic for a remote worker in the IT/Telco industry, but I have tools to make it work.
