Something to be aware of.....

In the last couple of days, I've started getting SMS on my phone with fake links to track package deliveries. Since we are getting so many things delivered to our home during COVID, it would be easy to click on one of those and end up installing some malware on your phone.

So far they've been easy to spot with the typical poor grammar and random link address. I've also had a few in my email account during the last week.

Guess I've been lucky until now, but seems my number is now on some list. Have had the calls, but not SMS before.

Yet another thing to have to ignore in addition to all the "Amazon Prime" and "Telstra Account" billing phone calls.

My read of it is if someone who had the malware on their android had your number then its scraped
from there. As they are sent from legit phone numbers as an sms the telcos can't block it. Freaking annoying eh

Had that a couple of times too. Can usually tell but the URL that something is up.

Got a couple of SMS informing me that I've been convicted of the crime and now need to pay the lawyers fees and the fine. Always got to be kept in the loop

I get more spam from the cellphone provider so I'm happy with that.

No, I'm against all of them on principle. It costs something to run all of those systems, so the consumer pays for them in the end.

I think CH3MTR4IL5 probably has it right, my number has been harvested from someone else contact list on their phone.

When you get old, like you, you need to be aware of heaps of stuff.

There are Irish guys getting around our area offering asphalt driveways at cheap rates. They come each year and have a great story. But all they leave is broken dreams.

My advice is getting those aluminium shutters, that old people get, lock out everyone and watch the MSM as much as you can stand. Only talk to outsiders through crimsafe screen doors.

Wait until it's all over.

Thanks for the advice. I'll take your word that it will be useful when I reach your age, you do really seem to know a lot about this stuff!

all coming from Australian numbers. luckily the phone filters it automatically which is handy

Oh yeah, I've had a few emails that I've discovered in my Spam folder that warned me I had 7 days to pay them some amount of bitscoin or they'd release the photos of me/delete all my information from my hard drive/publish my browser history...

Bit egotistical to assume I was replying to you, but that's expected.

Thanks for passing that on though, perhaps you could contact the supplier for us? You seem to have a tight relationship with them...

I've had my current phone for 4 years... total call time is something like 4 hours, and I'd bet it's all the wife using my phone to call hers cos she's misplaced it... Like the guy who won't land people, I won't pick up the call

Less stressful? Ever forgot to set the VCR for your favorite show?

We've had two calls in 15 years on the land line. One was a wrong number, the other was the world's most depressed Telecom salesman...

Comes as a package deal with the multi-Gigabit internet, because people still use faxes in this country

same here. bastidos. my mate's 80+ y o mum fell for it and lost a few grand. My problems with phone spam / calls started after a GF advertised our car on gumtree against my explicit directions to not put ANYTHING on gtree ever. she put my number there and ever since the calls n sms are daily. mongrels.
Another time i got bombarded for weeks after looking for a shipping container and made the mistake of calling Joy Containers. I called then for a few weeks afterwards and they admitted they put numbers into a mail system! bunch of ankles.

When you're young what you need to realise is that old farts have already eaten all their chocolates.

There's no guarantee for you that there will be any.
