What the hell is going on here??
These fat cats that mooch off us all are abandoning the helm?
Too dangerous for them to keep parliament open, but it's fine and good for schools to remain open??
Shouldn't they be leading by example and staying the course, or have they deemed themselves to be non-essential?
www.sbs.com.au/news/federal-parliament-to-shut-until-august-as-coronavirus-causes-revised-schedule
Compared to a school, they should easily be able to abide by strict hygiene rules, not touch anyone, keep a safe distance, sanitise as necessary. Seems like the pigs on the animal farm are still more equal than others.
They are non essential. Just like a tick sucking the blood out of a cow is non essential to the continued survival of the cow.
To be fair, they don't do much productive work from day to day, so we aren't going to notice it.
May as well let them stay at home and stop making ilinformed decisions, and save us the cost of health care if they did otherwise get it.

Also save us the cost of their meals, drivers, car rental, Travel Allowance, etc etc etc.
However its pretty certain if they can't travel to Canberra to sit in parliament they will have to change their addresses so their home address is their spouse's unit in Canberra, where they stay and claim Travel Allowance when in Canberra. This will allow them to claim Travel Allowance when they are living at home for a few months.
It would be quite an impost upon them and would disrupt their financial arrangements if they stopped receiving their Travel Allowance for a few months. I mean losing out around a thousand bucks a week that is tax free income is really an amount no one could afford.
Love the political bashing. (I love politicians as much as the next hater)
This is new ground every government is having to deal with.
There are NO right decisions which can be made (unless you operate a dictatorship).
But there are a hell of a lot of wrong decisions which can be made.
Unfortunately it is the general public (that includes you and me) which are making a lot more poor decisions.
Leave the political point scoring for when this is over.
Think about the medical staff working ridiculous hours in the coming months having to step around people laying on floors in hospitals knowing there is very little they can do for them because we just don't have the capability to look after that many people.
Think about the people going through chemotherapy (my boss is one) who don't have an immune system, think about their families knowing this.
Then think about the sh1t loads of people who have lost their jobs and their houses.
Think of the business owners which have had to close their doors and still have to pay their rent and if they shut permanently still have to pay the lease till it runs out.
Do the right thing, self isolate as much as practicable without a lock down in place.
This is more than a case of the sniffles and it is going to have a long lasting effect on everyone whether you get sick or not.

Yeah, I think you can be sure they will be onto it! They seem to know well how to make the most of any 'entitlements' they are eligble for.
yep pollies take 6 months off , nothing changes life goes on ... but if the garbo don't turn up for 6 months there would be a huge stink.....one can conclude that garbos are more important than pollies....
right leaning ones ....

What are you on about???
The pollies are the ones abandoning ship, not 'us, you and me', we're the ones in the trenches with the healthcare workers, people losing their jobs etc, all while the absconders are sitting back, drinking champagne and paying us lip service.
None of them are losing their jobs or doing it tough, lining up at Centrelink etc
They are the ones who have made the majorly wrong decisions, sending mixed messages and generally dragged their feet when we had a good amount of foresight into what was coming and what should be done.
They're the ones, through their words and inaction that have led to the situation where the majority of ostriches have, as you put it - "Unfortunately it is the general public (that includes you and me) which are making a lot more poor decisions."
Poor decisions from the general public due to the piss-poor 'leadership' shown by the pollies not imparting the true gravity of the situation.
Struck out cause you can speak for yourself, I've been doing what I can from the beginning.
You can go ahead and get your banners out and cheer on the pollies, but don't expect people to not call out the BS when it's rubbed in our faces.
They've not abandoned the trenches, they're just not in parliament.
You've never heard of remote access before? Skype, video conferencing?
I've been working from home the past 3 weeks with lesser tools than the pollies have.
No none of them are lining up at centerlink but at least they've made it so people can get something from centerlink as it needed to be done.
The sh1t fight will happen when the bean counters get in and realize that $1m extra unemployed @ $550 per fortnight is over a billion dollars a month added to the countries slate which we are all going to have to pay for at some stage but needs to be done none the less. The Coalition will get crucified once it's over and done with, but it needed to be done.
Should they have shut everything down weeks ago, probably, but then there would be even more unemployed at centerlink, sorry they can't get there cause it's locked down.
As I stated the only type of government which can control this is a dictatorship thankfully we don't have that in Australia, we have a democracy which I kinda prefer no matter who's at the helm.
This whole episode is unlike anything the world has had to deal with before. there is no precedence to learn from.
There is no right way, there are a lot of things which in hind site can be done wrong and there's a truck load of keyboard warriors complaining.
Was your original post helping the situation? Offering practical advice? No, it wasn't, it was just whining.

And yet, here you are whining. Good example. Top notch. You're a paragon of virtue.
4000 people work in that fancy building in Canberra, many are in effect FIFO. I'd much rather they bugger off to their homes states before they all catch it and spread it, rather than catch it and still head home.
They've not abandoned the trenches, they're just not in parliament.

It doesn't seem the pollies have heard of it...

Coronavirus has made us all learn to work from home, so why not Parliament too?
