I've read through a few similar posts to this, but didn't quite get an answer that I'm looking for. I'm refurbing my old mal and topping it off with a new paint job. I'm using Montana Black aerosols for the base and Posca pens for the main design. I've been trying to figure out the best way to seal in the artwork with a durable clear coat. Most information out there says that when using acrylic paints, the best way to protect the art is with an acrylic clear coat. However, I've read that this can be done with a more durable polyurethane coat instead. Since I will be continuing to use this board for the foreseeable future, durability is a key concern (along with UV protection).
My question is this: can anyone confirm whether products such as U-POL Clear #1 or Minwax Polyurethane spray are compatible with acrylic spray paint and Posca pens (ie bleeding/cracking), and is there any risk of the polyurethane delaminating from the artwork?
You can but you want your artwork to be realllly well cured. Like a minimum of a week in the heat and plenty of airflow.
It is still not ideal to put 2K over any other paint so there is still possibility of some cracking or wrinkling especially if you put on a heavy coat. Having said that, I have done it many times with no problems.
