It is hard to imagine world without MS Windows.
But here we are at 2020.

Mobile phones and tablets could thrive on free Android or Chinese knock off soon.I found that could deal without MS Windows if needed. Those few remaining applets could be transplanted to Cloud in emergency. If that is star of the end of big Microsoft ? ( or we still need it for something ?
I could still read Seabreeze on my android phone.

It's interesting for sure. Remember when Alta Vista was the search engine most people used, yet most young people would never have heard of it. Similarly with some of the social websites, such as MySpace. I used to think that Facebook could never lose it's position, but now I get told by my kids that it's for "old people" and my youngest doesn't have it and doesn't want it.

Most of the businesses and corporates are heavy Microsoft users. Not just the desktop operating system but most back end systems. If anything I see an increase in use of Microsoft products. For example Exchange, office 365, SharePoint... Let's not forget they own Skype too. So no I don't think Microsoft is going anywhere soon

Same here! I may use windows once in a blue moon, then it's on a virtual machine in linux.
And Cern, have had their own linux operating system for years. It's called scientific linux or Centos.

What I found the most annoying about MS Windows computers live their own life on my expense. As a users we always had the least control what computer is actually doing or not. You did start computer and for next 15 min upgrades , download , spying , transfer and indexing of all your computer content was going on. MS Windows was designed for terror age when everybody is potential terrorist or communist spy, so all activity must be constantly monitored. If we looks at list of processes going on constantly, hardly few percent is only dedicated to our actual work- like a typing SB post and rest is Big Brother watching you or just printing Bitcoins on hijacked computers all around the world.
Why is that,
I could click OPTIMIZE on my android and achieve 100% in few seconds , but MS Windows will live their own life. The design in first place was utilized by hackers, because system on our computers was designed to be hijack be the creator.I will have no regrets at all when one day MS Windows loose the fight against Linux/Android .
Obviously new android systems and chinese counterparts will do exactly the same with absolute control/supervision of every activity , but at least we will be fully aware that somebody is constantly watching you. One day in the future AI ( artificial intelligence taking over human race) will have everything given on the table, maybe even to the stage when controlling chipsets will be already implanted on the birth of every human.

Macro, I'm surprised you aren't using linux, should be right up your alley.
I'm very impressed with mint mate, that's working well with my 9 year old machine. If you have a younger machine try mint Cinnamon. If you do a lot of gaming, it's best to either dual boot or run windows in a VM

I've been a huge Linux enthusiast since forever but I agree that the vast majority of people will still use Windows no matter what just because they're used to it. Just imagine that almost 25% of users still use Windows 7, and the majority of it being corporate segment because they're super stubborn and do not want to upgrade. I'm working at a local VR centre in Melbourne - virivr.com.au/ and you won't believe me that we're using Windows 7 on most of our machines as well.
