Hi everyone.

I've been to see a nutritionalist who has put me on a food plan which seems to be working great as I really want and need to shred quite a bit of weight.

at my workplace we had a health day where I stood on a machine and it told you bone density, water percentage, how much muscle you have, bmi etc.

i am trying to work out exactly how much fat I have on my body, here are the stats I know.

185cm tall
120kg
84kg muscle
4.3kg bone density
52% water

does anyone know the weight of organs, water etc in different size bodies so a fat weight can be calculated?

I've already shifted 7kg in 5 weeks so some of the other figures I was quoted will be wrong, my bmi has come down 3 etc

thanks in advance.

84kg + 4.3 kg = 88.3kg

120 - 88.3 = 31.7kg left over

Somethings not right... if you're 52% water.. that means you have approx 60L of water in you.. which is equal to 60kg...

I think muscle weight may be off?

Doesn't matter anyway.. you shouldn't worry about specific numbers.. just keep losing weight till your happy and get a bf% done again.

Sorry to hijack, but I'm in the unfortunate position of being perpetually low of BMI. Any hints as to a healthy diet that can get my weight up?

Short answer, you can't. That's not how it works. Body fat percentage needs to be directly measured. inference would be meaningless.
You could get some body fat calipers, but they are just as good as inference anyway.

I had thought you weigh someone in water to work out body fat!

At 120 there is something wrong!!!
are you sure you put your board down first?

Anyhow near 1.1/2 kg a week lost is a good effort and won't take long until
the girls start throwing themselves at your feet, something to do with the veranda rubbing on their forehead I'm told!

I skip breakfast and go easy on lunch and dinner when the girls stop begging, or I can't see best friend anymore!

If your serious I can get my wife to give you some advice via personal message on here?

She's a foodie and pretty much knows everything about foods and how they work in your body. Only thing is you might not like the reality of it! She will give advice about good fats, and proteins. She won't be telling you to up your sugar or salt or anything, but as I said she will be able to tell you the healthy way to do it! (She's the only 40yo mother of 2 I know that has a completely ripped 6 pack and muscles on top of her muscles) very fit and very healthy but will only put quality foods in her body! Up to you, but as I said only if your serious about health!

The only reliable way to check body fat % is with a dexa scan. BMI is rubbish really. I think Aaron Sandilands is classed as over weight using that. Skin folds are a good regular measure.

Make sure you do weights otherwise you'll end up "fat skinny". You dont want this. You might not lose much weight but you'll definitely drop BF which is the most important thing.. take it from another super heavy weight. I weigh 5kgs more than last summer but i'm 6cm thinner on my waist alone and my bf % is down to about 20% @ 128kgs

Just eat no processed ****, do squats and burpees and life is good

In seconds, this at-home health monitor can display a complete body composition profile, including weight, body fat % (total and segmental), body water %, muscle mass (total and segmental), bone mass, BMR, visceral fat, metabolic age and physique rating. Technology found in the BC-558 is the same advanced technology found in Tanita's professional line of segmental body composition analyzers.

I still wouldn't trust any scales that have an alarm clock A close mate and my training / events partner used one at his work and it was way off. He weighs mid 80's and has a BF of about 11% (ab's etc all showing) and it came back at about 16%. Up to 22% is classed as normal and healthy but theres a huge difference between 15% and 10% BF. No bro science needed there.

Dexa scan is the only accurate way. Its used for osteoporsis but it'll tell you an accurate figure and determine how many calories you actually need etc. I use skin folds now and while inaccurate they are guide that i'm going in the right direction.

2.5+ years ago i was 42ish% BF so i've been there and well still l am. It's truely a slow process, none of this biggest loser **** dropping 50kgs in 3 months. 99% will put it back on. I led a very unhealthy lifestyle. Too mucj crap and no physical activity (sound far too familiar in our younger generation???) and amongst other things i remember having to get out of the 50m pool at craigie because i couldn't complete a lap. All that is fkn disgraceful but my point is that i know how it feels.

Ditch the scales, get a dexa scan and take measurements (heaps of drawings on google) and photos to see the improvements. That's what's important.

But squat, there is nothing better than lifting that bar out of the cage and feeling it bending

Dezman is right, underwater weighing is the most accurate way to measure body fat...., also your weight loss rate is good at the moment, but it comes down to sustainable weight, which is a lifestyle action...... Scales that promise all sorts of analysis are a gimmick at best and potentially dangerous as they change your focus to unsustainable actions. Calories used > calories consumed is pretty basic concept..

A quicker approach might be if he stands on the bar and bends it that way instead.

Why?

The answer is clearly "too much" but you already know that. Focusing on individual figures isn't going to help much.

Calculate BMI here

www.heartfoundation.org.au/your-heart/know-your-risks/healthy-weight/bmi-calculator

Dont get too hung up on it though - it's fairly obvious you're overweight, but the good news is you're making a start. Keep at it.

Weighed 123kg (186cm) 24 months ago. now 94 and loving it - Good luck

BMI is bunk... Invented centuries ago for health insurance companies to set premiums. When I had 10% body fat, BMI charts showed me as borderline obese...!

We have similar scales here and they're just as inaccurate. Like a wind meter, use it as your own personal ruler but don't get hung up on the details!

Don't even bother with numbers at all!

Your clothes will tell you if your loosing weight and your wife/girlfriend will back it up. The mirror will third the motion and it will be carried!

Loosing weight and maintaining a healthy trim body isn't a week to week number check, it's a lifestyle!

Therefore don't diet, change your lifestyle.

hey hey

good on ya for making a start, I was 105kg 15 weeks ago and now sitting at 90kg and hope to get to 86 87kg. no matter who say what, fad diets, BMI, etc etc etc its all about diet and exercise, 3 meals a day, 1 hr in the gym, and some healthy snacks. nothing magical about it.

your cloths will tell you if your loosing weight and you will start to feel better.

The big trick is to keep it going and not fall back into old habits. Its a lifestyle change not a diet

BEst of luck buddy hope ya keep it going

You would be approximately 33% BF (84+4.5)/(120-(84 +4.5)). Lean mass includes waterweight organs etc. These scales are only a guide. Best way is either calipers or a Bi-pod scan or just google BF % pictures and compare.
