Hello Seabreezerssssss , As I really enjoy the ocean and capturing the creatures that live in it Im looking to purchase myself a boat.
Im currently an ABN holder that undertakes commercial maintenance work (building & construction works) for the state government in Western Australia.
Soooo I was wondering if anyone on here has some how got around purchasing a boat and claiming it on tax as a work tool / vehicle? Im happy to try anything as I hate paying so much tax ! Im looking to spend 20-30k on a plate tinny so it wont be a pretty boat by any means ! TIA
As long as you name it "Tax Seavasion" then all is above board...
You can have a corporate boat provided there's a use for it. I.e entertaining clients, marketing etc... But I'm no tax expert..
haha thats a great name! Ill keep that in mind. Im currently looking for work that I can do using the boat like wharf repairs etc
buy a boat use it stuff all for work take pictures occasionally for work reference and you can claim 50% quite easily without too much trouble, talk to your accountant, make the MOST of YOUR fiShing day and claim it as you should!
No not really. Unless its tool needed to access a work site. IE you need to travel to work on a Island, you'll struggle. Also being a boat you'll get looked at straight away by the tax department.
yeah sure its not for everyone to get a boat and claim , but if you have a legimate excuse talk to your accounatant and use it!!
As an ABN holder, see what kind of discretionary trust account you can have set up to reduce tax legally.
Do it the correct way and you wont have to try and claim a "boat" as a deduction when you can earn more than one lot of 18k under the tax free threshold.
A deduction will only offset approx 25-30% of the asset cost.
Im sure the taxation department would have you quick smart anyway - with that 2k GST claim you would also be making.
only a problem when you get audited.
how much work related things are you doing with the boat 50%? 5%, 90%, some sort of proof of it?
the stonemasons had a party boat at mandurah when they were doing the canals, im sure they claimed the parties and boat as work related?

In a case like that, if its only used for work related issues you'd be okay. But if you used it privately at all, you'd need to run a log book and the cost would then be prorated.
Even owning a boat yard, its was difficult..
But as has been said, you can claim anything, its just surviving the audit thats will be your problem
Boats and taxes, send up flags in the Tax department..
Create a charity "Boat rides for sick Kiddies",
You can then even pay a crew tax free, or hold poker parties on board. All for Charity of course (Works for Warnie)
Think of it this way, while you are using the boat in work hours for fishing etc your income will drop so therefore you will have less tax to pay.
Win win fish dinner
I knew a guy ( a friend of a friend of a friend...) . He bought his two new kites from a shop that also sold wet suits. (allegedly). So he got them to put "wet suits" down on the invoice (allegedly). His job was mostly scuba work on reefs in new ports , so his kites became fully deductible. (allegedly)
Do you have to put "Boat" on the invoice. How about just "Trailer" ?
It's not tax dodging, it's just lateral thinking.

Trailer would still be registered as a boat trailer. If you tried to have it altered then you'd get done by Transport. Also could be a issue with insurance if you played with rego info. Id suggest if you buy a charter business, you'd be cool
Maybe you could do surf charters, but as it was perviously pointed out, a surveyed vessel will cost you some considerable more amount of coin, defeating the original option, to save some money..
