I see in the Seabreeze News side bar, the story of the Blue Marlin caught off Exmouth is claimed as an Australian record at 1089 lbs. When I checked on the Lizard Island stats they have weighed in a couple of black marlins over 1400.
From a game fishing point of view, what's the difference. Are there fewer of them or something or a smaller species. When reading the story I got the impression that it was not just the biggest blue marlin ever caught, but the biggest marlin ever caught in Australia.
Words like "On their return, they were carrying an extra 1000lb in Marlin, and an Australian record"

Every time someone cracks the thousand pound the news reports go crazy (fake news)
However the black marlin is a bigger fish than the blue and does get over the thousand pound mark quite regularly but the blue marlin to go over 1000 pounds is the equivalent of a person being 8 foot tall super man being real and the teenage mutant ninja turtles really protecting the city.
Basically it is almost unbelievable
It happens but only one in a billion make it to that size. And I'd assume only one in every 10 billion actually gets caught at that size.
(All statistics are made up but basically 1000 pound + blue marlin allows said fisherman to walk with a swagger and tell everyone he got the biggest marlin ever)
Technically wrong but hey let them run with it
Pity it had to die. Talking to a kiwi mate who said he was in demand when fishing comps were on as he was set up for smoking these types of fish. What happens in Oz? Is it just discarded or what?
People will normally eat the fish they catch in game fishing comps.
Marlin are quite tasty however in certain areas of the world are protected from being eaten, you can game fish but not kill them.
The problem with big marlin is often the fight can kill them and than further there is too much mercury and heavy metals in a fish that size to really want to eat it.
often when going for the trophy marlin you catch mackerel and tuna which are prize prize table fish.
^^^ Man if you reckon mack or tuna is good over some of our reef fish you are seriously easily pleased.......
oily dark muck
Give me nannygai, coral trout, blackarse, geez even a nice KG whiting over that cat food.![]()

However the black marlin is a bigger fish than the blue
The Atlantic blues get bigger than both the blacks and Indo Pacific blues but the reason this is so significant is that there is a serious blue marlin fishery in it's infancy off Western Australia and many rumours of 800lb+ blues being lost up and down the coast so to have a grander proven is huge.
About 30 or 40 1000lb+ marlin are caught (and often released www.granderwatch.com.au) every year however the majority of those are blacks during the heavy tackle Great Barrier Reef season so anytime someone catches one elsewhere it's massive news.
It's the pinnacle of fishing and for all we know, in 10 years time we might see some of the best captains and boats based out of Geraldton and Exmouth chasing huge billfish. That'd be massive.
