Hi everyone, i purchased a tinny not long ago with a late 80s johnson 25hp on her.. i got it going, took her out in the water today for a couple hours n when i got it out the water this black **** was comin outta these holes.. oozing out.. the motor hadnt been run for a bloody long time, years even. My fuel to oil ratio was just over 50:1 as i was advised for a motor that hasnt been started in many years. Was oily and stunk of fuel..Any thiughts ?
Mate - if you have black oily sludge coming from your old Johnson, suggest google doctor, or better still, straight to the gp![]()
Here is an 80s 9.9 I have. Hadn't run in 10 years old bloke owned it he passed on, then it sat in a container that flooded. I paid $100 for it. Changed the plugs and it started fist pull hasn't missed a beat iv run it over to peel and back up the inside of Fraser Island ect.
yes black muck comes out of it, a combination of it running rich and 20 years of the original owners carbon coming out of the bottom of the motor.
That would be why you can no longer get a 2 stroke outboard brand new.
also look up the fuel to oil ratio.

forums.iboats.com/threads/1985-evinrude-9-9hp-2-stroke-50-1-or-100-1-oil.443851/don't believe half the things you reed on the internet mine still has 100/1 stickers on it.![]()
it needs a tune I know that much it's a bit slow on the top end.

"Outta these holes" do you mean the exhaust? If its coming out of the exhaust it just needs a good run. My yamaha 15 did the same until i held it flat out from wellington point ramp to peel and back.

I know **** all about outboards so probably shouldn't comment. But I was once aligning pulleys on a small engine and stupidly I tipped the engine back while I turned the pulley, oil went where it shouldn't as the valve opened=black mess, not running. Which is the long way of saying you may just need to strip it down and clean it, or maybe not, I've got no idea.

Other people seem to be suggesting that just giving it a good floggin' will see it come right.
Maybe they have more experience than yourself ?
