Anyone using or have used Apple TV?....I would welcome any feedback...does the TV need to be fairly new?

I bought my apple TV purely as a way to stream movies from a hard drive (ReadyNAS) or computer to my TV.
I also use it now for Netflix. For this purpose, it has been faultless. I have thought of changing to another device that supports Plex but the latest Apple TV supports it now too so may stay with apple.
My TV is about 8 years old.....
Love it. Use it For Netflix or renting the latest movies using wifi data from Optus which is unmetered . Never pirated and never will.Thats a laugh cause I don't know how to anyway.
Good also for playing content off the iPad or any other Mac on your wireless network...eg kids using iMovie to make a film and then watch it on a big screen.
I've borrowed a new Apple TV that I'm using on my ten year old TV and amplifier. I was not sure if the sound would work as my amp will not transmit sound via HDMI, only video.
I set up the ATV as my Playstation 3 I used for media duties, networking has died.
The sound works for me. The way its set up is a HDMI connection to the TV. The TV is connected to the amp via an optical cable outputting sound from the TV to the an input on the amp. I was a bit surprised it worked as previously I was sending sound from the PS3 to the amp via an optical cable.
I doubt the sound is high def or anything like that but it sounds okay.
The Apple TV is quite good however I'm not sure if I'd buy one. I'm kind of more interested in the Android media players out there as I'm not a big fan of Apple. However my wife likes Apple stuff & has an iPhone so we might end up buying an Apple TV

I ended up getting the Apple tv for the other half..she only watches ABC iview and SBS on demand...youtube is pre installed..easy to use...has SIRI also....thanks for the advice/opinons
Had the original Apple TV and it was great to be able to watch Vimeo, YouTube, Red Bull TV, rented movies etc. It's wifi performance was not great.
Sometimes I just plugged my laptop into the TV and used that. It was much better for the things we wanted to do.
Got a Telstra TV (Rokai device) as part of a bundle. That has SBS On Demand and iView and the wifi performance is much better.
The TV you plug it into is irrelevant as long as it has a spare HDMI input socket.

Yes, totally agree...! Apple TV needs a HDMI cable...
Worst case, you could no doubt buy an adaptor on eBay, HDI to "Yellow Red White" thing... AV Cable... :)
HDMI is not that new, so any half modern 10 year old TV will (should) have HDMI...
I think Apple TV is quite good... If you have an iPhone, and an iTunes account, all your stuff shows up on Apple TV...
To be honest, it is great in terms of not fluffing around with DVD's...
Lots of stuff available on YouTube these days too... But iTunes store opens up Hollywood Movies catalogues, which really aren't meant to be on YouTube, but you will find the occasional Hollywood Movie on YouTube...
Worst thing about Apple TV: probably the slightly slow text input, when you are searching for a specific item... But the browsing if pretty good...

Text input using the Apple TV remote is slow and painful but if you use the Apple TV remote app on your iphone or ipad it is way easier as you can use their key boards, (or you can use the apple wireless keyboard).
I have an all apple household and I have the sound output of Apple TV played through a Yamaha 7 +2 amp so often when watching a youtube or vimeo or whatever video on phone or ipad I just flick it through via Airplay mirroring and Apple TV onto the bigscreen/amp, easy as.
Also with the Telstra as a service provider I get free unmetered access to the AFL app so watch any AFL game I want on TV via iphone.
For convenience nearly every thing I watch or listen to, Netflix, Youtube, Spotify, Gopro movies or even all my music on iTunes is played via my apple TV.

Pirating is such a pain anyway. Navigate through www.catchaids.net to spend an hour downloading something that ends up being dubbed in Spanish with Norwegian subtitles.
Or pay a measly amount to have finished watching it, perfectly, before you've even done the above. And support the people that made it so they can make more. FFS.
Take my $6 for a new release iTunes. Take my $12/month Netflix for more than I have time to watch. Ditto Spotify.
Streaming on demand is where it's at. It can't get any better.
P.S. Why people are still on Foxtel, except for sport, is beyond me. Complete mystery. **** content. **** quality. And it has ads. All this for $100+ a month? And the set-top boxes chew up more electricity than a refrigerator, all day and night. I'm truly baffled. Does it hypnotise people? Subliminal programming or something?
