Hi there,
this might be a stupid question but I ask anyhow:
Anybody knows who this surfer is and who the photographer?
I would like to use the photo and find out who holds the copyright.
THX!
If you found this on the internet, then I wouldn't be too worried about a copyright, the internet is mostly considered a public domain, and that includes photos.
If the photographer was concerned about copyrights, you wouldn't have been able to download it, just view it only, or it would have a watermark on it.
first posted here : surfingindia.net/india-surf-tours/
but then as Mast bender said the pic has been all over the web so I wouldn't worry too much
when looking for the origin of a pic i use reverse engines such as www.tineye.com/
even though this is a troll post - the picture was taken by pete frieden, my friend is the photo before the shots a few years old use the photo. Trolling over you caught a great white guppy..
Wrong OK.![]()
That is me, and the photo is taken by my good friend Pete Robbo.
The location is a secret and will not be divulged as it breaks like this everyday of the year wether there is swell or not.
It is a short walk from my beach front home that overlooks six breaks of similar quality.
Thats all the info you are getting.
Oh by the way, I am happy for you to use the photo anytime you want.

the photo is a little confusing because he's a natural foot that obviously went switch foot on this wave
and yep thats ET![]()
Hi Guys sorry to be a bore, but in regards to copyright you couldn’t be further from the truth.
Just because an image can be found on the internet does not mean that it is public domain.
Image copyright is alive and kicking and does and will give you a nasty slap in the face if you are discovered using someone’s image for commercial purposes. Watermarks can be removed through cropping the image, or even through patient editing out.
You can lock an image so that it can’t be dragged off the browser and onto your desktop, but that just stops the lazy. A simple screen shot will give you the same result. If an image has been all over the web “congrats to the photographer” it means that either social media is working for him or his pockets are lined with gold via licensing agreements with of the image with commercial enterprise.
There will be many exceptions to the rule, as we all love to share images and generally we are not fussed how far it goes, forums etc.
But if the photographer earns a living from their images, unless you have the consent of a photographer, copying an image from the net for commercial gain via any form of media advertising (including social media) can and does become a costly mistake.
The notion that “Oh I thought it was just a cool image to display on my website” (say, surf shop), isn’t an excuse that holds up in court.
Ps @Wavekiter
The surfers name is Daniel Jones and the image was posted to the India Surf Tours FB www.facebook.com/IndiaSurfTours page in November 22 2012 and considering the only photographer tagged in the image is a fella called Dustin Elison, I would probably send him a facebook PM via his FB page at www.facebook.com/dustin.t.ellison His page is still active as he last posted to it on May 13.
I hope this helps you with your needs. Cheers!
If you use Chrome, and you should, you can just right click on image and choose 'search google for this image'.
Thanks to your help I was able to locate the photographer:
Allan van Gysen / rider: Daniel Jones.
So a big thank you!
Let me also add that I fully agree with CrossStep: Thanks to great photographers we have these awesome photos. So it is natural to me to respect their rights - whatever way they decide for their own work. If one choses to give it away to the public : fine and honorable. If one charges for the rights : fine and honorable as well ;-)
