The lady and myself are flying to Kuala Lumpur at the beginning of September and I thought about traveling around Sumatra. Any places you can recommend (or anything else near Kuala Lumput without flying too much)? We'd like to have a bit of a mixed holiday, some culture, some beach, rain forest (and maybe some kitesurfing). Heard about Banda Aceh. Is that nice up there if there is no wind? Thanks for your help.

Malaysia and Aceh are both sharia so if you like that you will be fine. http://www.aceh-kite(remove this stupid seabreeze filter)camp.com/ seabreeze(remove this stupid seabreeze filter)kiteclub.com/aceh-indonesia/ you should be able to send an email to one of these guys to find out what the wind is doing. You should be able to get a flight thru Medan to Aceh. traveloka.com is great for booking flights in Indo. Otherwise you could try Lakey Peak in Sumbawa get a flight thru Bali to Bima.

Thanks for the info. I've already booked the flight to KL and back home.
Any ideas about non kiting things to do and see?

Spent 6 weeks north sumatara last year, fly to medan then go to bukit lawang and see orang utans, awesome spot and cheap to stay but treks pricey. Also then go onto lake toba as part of the drive, well worth it. If u want surf then Nias island is a one hour $100 flight, 3 n 4 days for transfer food and accomodation down south (indicators) for $350

Tip 1:- Make sure your visa is up to date. They will lock you up for nothing there.

Tip 2:- Taxis can be cheaper on public holidays than buses.

Tip 3:- Do not trust anybody.

I've been to KL many times and done a few trips out from there to Thailand and Redang Island for diving, I've never once regretted not taking my kites as I've never experience anything more than what I consider a gentle breeze.

Koh Lipe is a pretty cool little island for relaxing and chilling by the ocean, fly the short hop to Langkawi then get a speed boat across.
