Adblock -> block element if you find them annoying.
I find animated ads super annoying - I really can't understand how people live with a flashy flashy web experience it drives me utterly insane - but having said that in order to support them I whitelist sites I visit a lot if they commit to static ads (hint hint).

i like a few of the avatars and don't know if it's just me or not but if the avatar is annoying me ( even subconsciously ) I don't read their post. Not real keen on the pics of people doing kite tricks that are so small all you can make out on the avatar is water and sky.

Bugger! Yes that's annoying but I find animated avatars more annoying.
I find myself pushing the window off the screen to the left to hide the avatar if I want to read a post with an animation, but mostly I just skip them.
If people want animal's on their avatar's im cool with that
