So I'm currently in negotiations with one of Mexico's leading artisinal producers of Mezcal and Tequila to bring his product into Oz. He's over here at present with his business partner and we're running a couple of master classes for the trade around town.
Tell ya what it's been a bit of a revelation, this stuff is amazing. It's Teq/Mez but not as you know it. We already have some of the best spirits in the world in our portfolio but I've never seen anything that comes close to these, amazingly complex but soft like limestone rich spring water. Fat, soft and round. Actually more approachable than most fortified wines. True sipping spirits.
I worked Whiskey Live over the past weekend in Perth and there was nothing remotely as interesting as this gear. Different category I know but....
Who's spent a bit of time in Mexico? Give me your thoughts on their booze.
Not Corona.

Well being Mexican... I can only say.. I love tequila hahahaha.. There is another alcohol named Pulque.. which is rather strange but we mexicans love it.. funny enough Pulque agaves are abundant in Perth.
Cheers.
Need to contact Phil Bayly....
He is the unofficial Tequila Ambassador for Australia and has many years of experience with the Mexican products.
He used to own/run Cafe Pacifico in Sydney, but has now closed down to focus on the tequila industry.
Anything you want to know about making, drinking, importing, distributing tequila and mezcal, he is the one to speak with.
I've been buying enjoying agave for about a year.
Agreed - I enjoy it straight. Best tequila I've ever had.
But I can already buy it at my local.
What's your stuff? Can I promote it? Send me a case and a sticker for my sail. (jokes (maybe))
i spent a few weeks in oaxaca & tried some amazing mescals. some of them were flavoured with coffee, nuts, chocolate, & fruit. i even had one distilled with chicken (not so good). the best tasting ones were the backyard home-brewed type, poured from a fuel tin or an old glass jar.
rough hangovers though...
the best mexican beer i tried was called victoria bitter (tastes nothing like the aussie swill of the same name), brewed in the mexico city region.
One of the best tequilas I've ever had, which I can't find anywhere anymore :( was called 'TQ Hot'
It was a light golden colour tequila with citrus flavour and a bit of chilli to it.
Came in a clear bottle with a logo of a metallic bull on it.
Such a shame it doesn't seem to be available anymore, was sooo good.
Would be really interested if anyone knows if it's available anywhere.

Oh Panda you need to broaden your horizons.
And apparently I need to hold my iPad up the other way.
Patron, Don Julio are good cant recognize those bottles been here for too long I guess, photo is really bad!! and I know the place "El Publico"... good tacos.. best mexican food in Perth.. though Las Palomas arent that good to be honest, thats coming from a Mexican.. but Australians might like it.. so dont mind me ;)
I see plenty of "Ocho" in the background.
They are made from single field batches and if you do a tasting, you can immediately tell the difference between a high lands and a low lands bottle...
Its amazing how different the palate is for each.
All of these are single field, in fact Tequila ArteNOM are the only label in the world to release a blanco, reposado and anejo from separate NOM under the one brand and that took the best part of a decade of lobbying the government to achieve. The blanco is from a site at 2130m and is by far the best blanco I have ever seen. Fat, round and so, so soft. It's gonna sound funny but it reminds me of the water out of our bore from the beach house at Moore River as a kid. Dad had to drill through about 20 m of limestone to get to water and it was just delicious, fat and round with an impression of sweetness.
The Fuenteseca Reserva 1995 is the oldest commercially released Tequila on Earth, 18yrs in old French oak. It comes across as something akin to Delamain XO interbred with Ardbeg 10 but with Agave DNA. Delicate, refined, intense and incredibly long. 48 bottles were made available to the New York market, 48 to the West Coast USA. Australia might get 12. Will be up around a grand a pop and the scary part is that we could've pre sold all of that today at a masterclass we hosted.
Can't wait to get my paws on this stuff![]()
Have loved Don Julio since before you could get it in Oz. Went to Mexico in 2002 and tried a few. Tres Generacions was also good as was El Himidor.
Patron is nice but overpriced for what you get.
Current favorite is Don Julio 1942 but its expensive here.
