Alright I looked at a couple surf resort adds. ( macaronis) Anyway I don't know how it does it but it seems to be following me to every page I go to. It's fully amazing, however it sort of creeps me out as well. Feels likethe matrix knows what I'm thinking before I've thought it. Is this normal? How does the Internet know... Is it a sign I need to go to macaronis? But seriously any one else?

Programs are run and with the Internet you will get the types of pop ups you've looked at. In the USA and i have heard in Aus as well, some large super market chains will print specials on the back of your receipts for discounts for products you might like based on what you've just bought..

This is what amazes me about people who get busted for Internet kiddy porn. Don't they notice how personalised ads follow them? And then think that maybe the cops could use the same program?

No. It's not cookies.
Your browser contains a lot of information about your system, enough information to make you unique.

panopticlick.eff.org/

In layman's terms it's like your car. There are plenty of silver Toyota Camrys but yours is unique. There are little things abuot it that even with the plates removed you could identify it amongst hundreds of other silver camrys.
Little things like a scratch here or a child seat there, what's in the glovebox; "fingerprints."

I've noticed flight specials know where i've recently searched for flights.

Marketing is way, way ahead of any government agency. Agencies are stealing marketing information, or demanding it; it's easier.

...and then using that unique identifier sites, or the ads on those sites more often, will record that you were there, and perhaps what you searched for or did while you were there.

Marketing giants like Google have databases keyed by your browser's unique identifier, and have the smarts to link that ID with the ID of your other machines too, that contain all sorts of history. It's valuable data.

Just remember - whenever you get something for free you are the product. Even right here on SeaBreeze.

Hey kiteboy dave. Wouldn't saving chrome and add ons just have more access to your computer over just getting a few adds, as now they could gain more info and just hide the adds as a bonus to us..

Not sure if that sounded right, but does that make sense or am I really left field on this one. I ask as I use firefox, then when finished I use cc cleaner.

Cheers

@ Kiteboy Dave: out of curiosity how un-unique does that make you?
panopticlick.eff.org/

...just because it sounds like it would make you even more unique.

This laptop is a company laptop - locked down. Generic.
There are 300,000 people in the company.
And yet it is unique.

Yep, Chrome's terms of service means that they track you.
You can try and lock the door (with the plugins mentioned above), but if the door did not have hinges or a frame to start with then it's a waste of time.
Google are the largest advertising company in the world. You are a commodity to them.
Firefox and cc cleaner are good. Also duckduckgo.com as your search engine (available as a default in Firefox) will lessen the tracking that occurs to you.

I'm not sure I exactly get you - chrome does give google some info, however they provide the extensions for you to opt-out so if you're out you're out.

Also chrome tries to get you to log into your "google" account to use it these days. Then it does stuff like syncing your bookmarks across any browsers you use. Handy when your pc bookmarks are in you phone. Not so much say if your pr0n computer's bookmarks got added at work. Again, you don't have to.

Disconnect or Ghostery stop web tracking by 3rd parties and show you how much is going on - sometimes it's amazing, because ads have trackers built in and so do all those little facebook/twitter/etc buttons (even if you're not logged in, if you have a facebook account, every time you see that little blue button facebook is watching you). So sometimes 1 ad you see has a chain of 30 linked trackers by different companies.

There are issues with whether you trust the makers of the extensions, and Ghostery had some controversy a while back as they allow some tracking/do their own limited tracking but it's 'opt-in' not 'opt-out'.

Also unique - and it's all down to the combination of browser plugins - the rest is generic. So I have 14 browser plugins and none of the other 4.6 million run those exact 14.

I bet it's 'stop tony meow' that really singles me out

chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stop-tony-meow/dilmdkcidhplbhnpehjmiahegnkpilnf?hl=en

But being unique and having your web use tracked aren't really the same in my understanding - a site might know I'm me but they can't track me anywhere else. Which limits them to what a cookie can do , and I allow cookies already..
