Anyone tried the Aldi (Bauhn) flat screen TV's? Any good?

I'm asking cause there's a 65" Ultra HD (4K) Smart TV at Aldi this weekend that I'm thinking of getting.

I'm bored... Google told me $1199 and www.productreview.com.au/listings/bauhn-aldi-4k-uhd-tv

It's pretty-well a normal distribution from meh to yeah! Which is a lot better than this model: www.productreview.com.au/p/bauhn-50-127cm-full-hd.html.

Some old housemates had a dick Smith tele which I'd imagine is in a similar league (just a guess). It was garbage. Light leaking in from the edges everywhere.
Maybe Aldi is different, but with that sort of stuff, you get what you pay for.

I have the 58" UHD DEF smart tv from Aldi. They are definitely good value but... They are a slow start up and channel change which is a bit annoying. Clunky remote and menu. I would rather it not be a smart tv. I think your better off without it and just use Apple TV. They are average at showing grey blacks which a lot of shows seem to be dark nowadays. Nothing broadcasts in UHD and I don't have a blue ray so I'm probably not using it to its full potential. I have had no luck with longevity with Samsung or Panasonic. I would buy again however if you compare it to the latest generation 200hz big name tv's the picture quality is average. However you would pay $4k + for a 65".

I have the 55" UHD smart TV from aldi (bought for $799 3 months ago). agree with pearl, it takes almost a minute to start up, compared to my 4 year old samsung which takes just over a second. they call it smart but its not that smart a tv, cant load apps like netflix which is annoying. the sound is tinny and crap. i have only been watching free to air tv and netflix through a google chrome cast, so not using the UHD as yet. i bought it as a second tv that does not get used much and for that it works well (did not want to pay much for a TV that doesn't get used much). if it was my main tv i would have taken it back, as the load time and channel change time would kill me. adding a soundbar would fix the sound issue. harvey norman had a 55" UHD samsung for just over $1000 yesterday (www.ozbargain.com.au/node/255383) , so prices are definitely coming down.

also jbhifi have there soniq (cheapie TV) 65" UHD for $998, no idea on how it compares to aldi's. but your saving $200, so thats a plus!: www.jbhifi.com.au/collections/tvs
you could always buy both and compare them side by side at your place. if they are about the same then keep the soniq since its cheaper and Aldi accept returns within 60 days for any reason, not sure on jbhifi's return policy though. the only reason i went with aldi's was there was nothing at that price at that time that was close to it and i knew i had 60 days to return it if i did not like it.

Panasonic normally do excellent products with very intuitive menus (which is important - try following the logic in a Sony product).

I have had lots of Panasonic video cameras (over 20) which have been far more robust than almost any other brand, and several Panasonic TVs which have gone the journey with satisfactory performance. No complaints or breakdowns at all. I can't say the same for a couple of other brands.

I chewed through VCRs and DVD players every year to 18 months until I switched to Panasonic.

You get what you pay for and After my experience professionally, I bought a smaller Panasonic than cheaper brands, but have great picture quality, start up, menus, sound quality. I only buy Panasonic audiovisual now. Except for the Grundig second tv.

The slow channel change and poor tv guide on our dick smith telly that just blew up was driving us crazy, so i'll look around for something more suitable. Also seems that getting the thing home is a difficult task. Beginning my new career today, so don't have time to go to Aldi anyway - counting votes in the election for some retirement pocket money

Samsung were pretty good and, to be fair, no private consumer is ever going to put pressure on audio visual gear like a full time media teacher who also hands equipment to 14 year olds. The Samsung VCRs/DVDs players were far far better than JVC, LG, Sony - the other brands I tried a fair bit of - but not quite as "classy" as the Panasonic equipment. The video cameras were far worse than Panasonic and Sony, but much better than the JVCs. When I worked for a television station all the equipment was Panasonic so when I got tired of replacing equipment I thought I would give a premium brand a go and I have never regretted it professionally. Like I said, my professional experience then influenced my personal preferences.

Samsung menus were good and the start up rapid, but they would eventually break downs well. I was getting 2-3 years from the Samsung VCR. One lasted 7.

There is a LG OLED 55" at good guys on run out. $2545 plus a $300 credit card voucher. ($2245 total) It's not the 4k but picture is superb, as good as it gets. They display vivid blacks which is great for all these dark series on HBO etc. Remote is easy (pointer)and response is fast. Menu is intuitive. (you don't need to read a manual) 5 1/2 star energy with OLED panels. Screen size is full width with no frame, and curve is subtle. I could use existing wall mounts. They are only as thick as a dinner plate. Sound is ok; but i use a soundbar which has great surround. It's by far the best panel I've owned. A HD OLED is giving a far better picture all round than a new 4K in other brands. Simply no comparison with the bauhn. It's come down and been relegated to the reserve bench!

For a cheap tv the Soniqs arent bad, I was using the smaller ones in cctv installations as for the price you got all the inputs you'd ever need & the picture was better than the dedicated "name brand" monitors we were getting from suppliers. Never had any fail, no pixel drops but reasonable warranty anyway. One of the kids gaming screens has a little bit dodgy sound but you'd be better running seperate speakers anyway.

Dont recommend them for smart tv use, the interface though android is really clunky & has issues with some playback compatibilities. Start up is fine & quick, slightly slower than samsung. Even with Samsung though better to make/get media centre machine for that.

Picture wise you do get what you pay for, better to drop to 55" Samsung & pay a little more, though I use a Soniq 65" as gaming screen & is fine.

My experience: Purchased a 55" UHD two weeks ago. $600. It installed easily, with no need to adjust the default settings. Picture quality surprisingly good. Remote controls simple and logical.

However, the behaviour of the on-screen program guide was dumb; you have to select a channel group to see what's on offer within that group. For example, if you are watching Prime, scrolling between all the Prime stations (7Mate, Plus7, Prime7 etc) gives you a list of those channels' offerings. However, move to an ABC channel, say, and the program list is empty - you have to select an ABC channel for the ABC lists to be populated. The manual describes this as "normal". I guess I could put up with this behaviour, although it's not how I've seen other manufacturers' program guides work.

But, I had two major problems when recording (to the USB port). Longer recordings, those typically more than one hour, would be written in segments. A message on the screen randomly informed that the "USB speed is too slow. Recording has been canceled (sic)". So, a game of footy might be spread over several files, and files 2, 3 etc couldn't be paused, fast-forwarded, reversed and so on. Further, when playing back, the video and voice would get out of sync, which was disconcerting, to say the least.

I have to say that Tempo, the phone help people, were way better than most. They knew of the technical requirements for the USB to work (FAT32, USB 2.0 etc), but after several calls, reformats, factory resets etc, were unable to come up with a resolution to the recording issues.

I know that a sample of one is not grounds to condemn the whole brand. I was unlucky with mine.

I took it back today.

I won't ever buy another Samsung telly. Our 50" just got out of warranty and a black line appeared from one side to the other.
Within a few months there were 4 more of these thin black lines.
Samsung will repair it for $900.

Perhaps try USB 3.0. Or maybe it's just an excuse and the buffer isn't big enough. It has to converting the signal to some A/V file and perhaps the computer just isn't up to the job.

The failure to support fast forward etc is just crappy cheap software.
