Summer in southern Europe it get's dark ~ 22:00hrs
In winter ~18:00hrs
East Coast USA is roughly the same as France, so ^^^.
UK which is close to the Artic, summer ~22:45, winter ~17:00hrs

Can somebody tell me why in the infinite wisdom of some gov department do we have to have 17:00 be dark in Sydney?
People get to work @ 08:30, and usually leave @ 18hrs, why is it dark at 17hrs????

So for a whole 4 months we can't do any outdoor activity during the week, then the **** will accuse us of being couch potatoes.

I presume you're joking...but just in case... Who says you have to operate between any particular hour shown on a clock? Just change your working hours or split your day to work early and late with a gap in the middle.

...and just as an aside, the UK gets dark by 3.30pm in mid-winter - at Australia's latitude we've got it good.

It's all about time zones.

Because Orstrayia is such a wide country,.. "the wide brown land for meeee,.." as the song goes, most states span a lot of longitude.

Since there is only one time zone for the whole state, they take a mid point somewhere in the state to base the time zone on, hence the places east of the centre point have early sunrises and early sunsets, and places west of the mid point have late sunrises and late sunsets.

Sydnoiy being a long way east of the mid point for NSW, therefore has early sunsets, so you get to go to bed early.

If you don't like it, feel free to move to Broken Hill and you can have late sunsets forever.

In WA we have the opposite effect of late sunrises and late sunsets as a matter of course because the mid point and thus the time zone base point, is taken as somewhere out near Kalgoorlie.
Which is why we're not too keen on daylight saving because that accentuates an already late sunset.

My government contract says my working hours are 8:30 - 17:30. By the time I get home it's usually 18:30.

Sydney June 30th: Sun Rise 7:01 AM, sun set 4:55 PM
London June 30th: Sun Rise 4:47 AM, sun set 9:21 PM
Madrid June 30th: Sun Rise 6:48 AM, sun set 9:49 PM

Sydney December 31st: Rise 5:46 AM, sun set 8:09 PM
London December 31st: Rise 8:06 AM, sun set 4:01 PM
Madrid December 31st: Rise 8:38 AM, sun set 5:58 PM

at Australia's latitude we've ain't got it good.

What the fark, Perth December 31st: Rise 5:13 AM, Set 7:26 PM you bunch of morons... how are you supposed to go enjoy wind sports if it's FREAKING dark in summer at 7????

They've got it right in Oslo June 30th: Rise 3:59 AM, sun set 10:42 PM

You need to look at the solar height as well
Below is Oslo at Midwinter sun gets 7 degrees above horizon
I lived there for 10 years and you would literally have to climb a mountain to see the sun in winter

Hi

I come from Hammerfest, Norway, right at the top of the world over 500 km inside the Arctic Circle. During winter, what sun, you don't see it for 3 months and in summer, what darkness.

Getting dark at 5.00 pm, boo hoo

Your comparisons are comparing summer with winter and winter with summer, due to different hemisphere.

If you compare like for like, you're not doing too bad.

Sydney December 31st: Rise 5:46 AM, sun set 8:09 PM
London June 30th: Sun Rise 4:47 AM, sun set 9:21 PM
Madrid June 30th: Sun Rise 6:48 AM, sun set 9:49 PM

Sydney June 30th: Sun Rise 7:01 AM, sun set 4:55 PM
London December 31st: Rise 8:06 AM, sun set 4:01 PM
Madrid December 31st: Rise 8:38 AM, sun set 5:58 PM

The differences which still show up in the above figures are due to latitude. That's not the govmints fault.
You can move to tasmania if you find the present situation intolerable.

Why can't the bastards just make it dark at 19hrs in winter, and 22:30 in summer?
Don't give me no latitude bs... a nation can choose it's timezone... hell even the damn state can!

I feel your pain...

I think clocks should be synced to follow sunset, like sunset at 8.30pm everyday...

So we can all have a life after work, government just likes us to be working and paying off debts not having free fun.

That's an interesting solution and a gain for windsport lovers. It's definately achievable in this day and age. However, I think this will confuse and frustrate the majority of Australians. Australia is a big country, and the business community (and customers) need time synchronisation. The current solution of the state zones is the best one I think.

Gambling Tabby. I feel your pain. I hardly sail in winter because of this reason (and lack of opportunity to take time off in winter).

Why don't they introduce daylight saving. Then they can use all the sun they save in summer, throughout winter.
Problem solved.

sorry to go the DLS path again - but Flysurfer you need to live in inland WA and try to go to bed every single night in Jan to March at 7:30pm, with no aircon.
I dare you.

Has anybody noticed that time zones are not set by a country's government. Time zones are based on a (approximately) vertical zone around the world. Should the whole world adjust itself to Flysurfers needs or should he/she just toughen up. I think there are more pressing things in the world.

Having said that, I have enjoyed stooping to your level. I love a stupid argument.

Well, they really are set by the governments, but they do generally use the obvious need to have daylight during the day.

I think Spain is a bit of an exception, where the timezone does not accurately represent their position. I read that it was changed by the Germans during one of those war things, and never changed back. All this explains why people sometimes say 'in Spain they don't eat dinner until 9, 10, or 11pm'. No wonder, they are in the wrong timezone! It would be like moving our timezones forward 3 hours and saying we don't eat dinner until late.

Why is it the older people get the earlier they go to bed. lol.
Most little kids are allowed to stay up till 8:30pm. Its kinda funny that the grandpapa's go to bed before the kids.
Just because Big Dog or Prime Possum says it bedtime at 7:30pm doesn't mean they have to go to bed.

^^^ always havin' a crack but in this case showing you are a bit simple I think.

I am not suggesting anyone has to go to bed at 7:30pm. I will spell it out for you so u don't need to think too hard:

Some people, like the O.P, are suggesting we make the sun go down at 10:30pm. By adjusting the clock.
DUH that would be the same (light and heat -wise) as going to bed at 7:30pm. ........ get it so far?

It would not be real pleasant trying to go to bed at 10pm in full fkn daylight and 40deg. Not everyone can start work at 9am.
That is why I chose to use the analogy of "imagine if you had to go to bed at 7:30pm all summer". Look up " a n a l o g y "
if you need to.

Following yet? Or maybe you do get it but can't resist the chance to go down the old trolling p1sstake path again. Sooo fkn original,

I dont have to "ïmagin" like you are doing markie, Test pilot lives there and isn't complaining like the city coastal dwellers are?
Not sure why you guys over there get sooo upset over the whole DLS thing, it only 1 hour?? Dosent mean because your iphone says its 7:30pm you HAVE to go to bed??? Go to bed when you feel you need to, not when the your local government tells you. shheesh.

And take it easy on the personal attacks on people, calling them stupid or simple or telling them to grow up.. because they have a different opinion to you, its against the site rules, along with getting around the swearing rules by abbreviating them,?
