Howdy,

Apparently it started to produce an unusual noise while driving.

Once parked for a couple of hours, it wouldn't unlock using key remote, finally unlocked after several attempts.

clock has stopped working, engine started easily but transmission is stuck in park. Check engine light is on.

update

over rode the transmission lock using button and can move car, but no lights work (including indicators), only headlights work

Any ideas on likely faults?

Cheers

Check fuses first.

Most automotive blade fuses allow you to check them with a multimeter without pulling them out.

That's what I'd do anyway.

Had the same with a Prado at one stage - got RACQ and it was fuse. Apparently pretty common.

Check long fusable link under bonnet it's a fusable link not a normal fuse about 60bucks need to get same part so take old one to Toyota get a match. Neb's right a blade fuse its called. I blew mine putting battery in wrong way when pissed . Still started but that was it had to drive home and open doors to cool cab down as it was Jan summer heatwave

Thanks for all that. Fuses were all checked at the time. Has two batteries and both good. Basically all electronics except basic engine, headlights and dome light have stopped. No charging from alternator at all.

Would ECU check for charge, then go into limp mode if something wasn't right (engine warning light) and remain like that even if fault was fixed, until the the code was cleared? Can't find much on the net for this year model.

@Paddles - that one's too clean

I reckon you've covered the basic troubleshooting and it might be worth a trip to your local techo or your toyota dealer who should have an analyser to interrogate the ECU for the fault log to find out what has made it slip into limp mode.

sounds like one of the big fixed fuses or relay switches under the engine bay fuse box,. Mine did that

I thought Hiluxes were unbreakable....Bugger!

As mentioned get a computer hooked up shouldn't have to go a to a dealer may be surprised at the fault codes that come up.

No charging from alternator at all.
There you have it. Either get it repaired, or replace. Standard fault list as you indicated in your list of issues.

bulbar smashing tracks thru bush Its become quite a valuable asset to the property. Replaced an alternator (from battery incident)easy job and fried the starter motor twhat to get to the bolts Apart from that its been a very reliable car. have the same 2009 ex miner from auction

I would never take a car to a main dealer. They will have apprentice work on it. Especially if it's in for the day and not diagnosed. Let us know the out come. Could be loads of things. Have seen looms Gail in them, have seen Ecus fail, really could be anything. Looking forward to there diagnostic path explained out :-)

unfortunately it's the gold coast, and many seem to be half-baked mechanics, and generally pretty lazy around here

If anyone can suggest a good mechanic on the northern end of gold coast, it would be appreciated, for future work

BCM for sure (if it has a separate one to the engine ECU?), if all fuses are good.

But the alternator not producing enough may be inconsistent with that......

The wife's RAV4 spent a couple of days at the local Tojo dealer a few years back when some of the electrics started playing up - the most notable was the power steering (I didn't even know it was anything other than hydraulic back then ). After many hours of "diagnosis" it turns out that it is standard practice for the wiring of the tow bar plug to terminate into an ECU unit (or something like that) and one of the wires had come loose and was causing an issue with the unit.

Apparently, all it took to fix was to secure the offending terminal with no damage to the ECU or whatever the unit is called.

It was an interesting drive of about 200 km back from down south on the Monday of a long weekend with only arm-strong power steering!

Has it got a 7 pin trailer plug?

I'd start there. Pull apart plug and see if there is obvious corosion or any water in there.

Then remove globes and check each socket for corrosion. Check globes on another car or replace.

Then work along wiring harness from 7 pin plug, into the back of cab, under passenger side kick panels and follow to underside of dash. See if there is anything obviously wrong with the wires and connectors (broken, squashed, melted or missing plastic sheath).

Then if you value your time like most of us who are no longer carefree and 22 years old I'd take it to an Auto sparky.

Chances are high that's exactly what the apprentice at the dealership has been asked to do.

That's 2 votes for aftermarket wiring.

If a faulty trailer plug of electric brakes etc causes such drama, count me out for a Tojo 4WD then. It is afkn disgrace if one can't add bits to tow without the most minor of upset destroying the whole system.

I had something similar happen to my Ranger, a short in the trailer wiring caused a fuse to blow and it went nto limp mode.

I had no lights, no radio or other electrics, transmission would only allow 2nd and reverse gears.

i thought it was transmission so I took it to a auto tran mechanic, he had it sorted in about 15 mins.

got car back. was a blown in line fuse as someone suggested, as a result of the faulty alternator. RACQ didn't pick up the faults so it went straight to toyota. I checked the alternator myself before it went but took RACQ word for the fuses. yeah it was probably wasted time with toyota apprentice diagnosing the car at first. It's about the third time the RACQ mechanics couldn't detect something fairly basic. Apart from getting into my cars when Ive locked the keys inside, they are pretty disappointing

$850 all up. it's hard to know whether to have replaced it myself as suspected or not to, just in case money's wasted on parts not really needed

thanks for all the suggestions though

@busterwa - it's been quite a good car too, and been back and forth to WA several times, as well as up / down east coast many trips, and time on beaches. Never been given much TLC. Everything still feel as tight as a new car

i guess i can't complain too much about my VS commodore v8 either. it did 400,000k in 2006. Although everything that bolts onto the engine has died at least once, the engine itself and almost everything else is still going, except for the air conditioner, and it's been running LPG constantly since 2000.
