Murray River Drought
The Murray river is in the grips of one of the worse droughts in recorded history,if it wasn't for the lock system the river would now be nothing more than a series of pools.
Communities all along the river are suffering from the lack of water for their horticultural industries.
The Murray also supplies water to some of South Australia's best fresh water windsurfing locations,Boggy Lake,Milang,Goolwa and Lake Bonney.
A few of these spots are too dangerous to sail because of low water levels and if the drought continues all these spots could dissapear within a year or two.
If there is a positive in this chaos is that the low water levels have uncovered one of the best speed sailing spots in South Australia/Australia at Goolwa.Peak speeds of 44knots have been recorded and averages from 37-40knots.
What makes the spot so great apart from the flat water and wind, is that there are nice lawns to rig on and 150m away a tavern to have a few drinks and a meal.
Lake Bonney is still good for windsurfing and although the water levels have dropped there is plenty remaining for windsurfing and boating.
It's only a matter of time when the rains replenish the Murray and water levels return to normal Boggy Lake will once again become the premier spot to sail at while the Goolwa speed strip will be nothing but a distant memory.
