With the flick of a wrist - Custom Stand Up Paddleboard Art
Just for something a little different...
Him and his mate Reu have been working on something unique for their boards, with a handful of paint pens, some rattle cans and a little inspiration from what looks to be a very popular smartphone game, namely Angry Birds...
So with all those tools and a backyard for the night, they've turned the lacklustre graphics on the PSH stand up paddle boards into masterpieces worthy of the Paia Contemporary Gallery. Better yet, they've made a video showing us how it all came together, at night!
Check out the video below to see what the boys came up with, but first a little history on the artwork. Paint pens have been used since their invention (way back when) for putting graphics on surfboards. Artists like Drew Brophy became famous in the 2000's when surf art became fairly mainstream, especially in America. After a few cameo appearances in TV shows like 'The OC', these paint pen style drawings became hot property and stacks of other artists began using the pens to liven up their surfboards. Newsagents near surf beaches all over the world began stocking the 'Tosca' paint pens in all the colours of the rainbow and soon kids were doing their own graphics on their own surfboards. Albeit most never ended up finished and condemned the boards to the bargain rack when it came time to sell them on.
A good artwork on a board however, can greatly increase the value of an old board for the right buyers. As long as it's done well, and relates to a buyer - some boards are fetching over $5000 for a dirty old gun that's ben thrashed all its life! So do you fancy a little drawing on occasion? Grab a few cans of paint, some paint pens and maybe a few spotlights if you want to be like Noah and his mates, but give that old board a makeover and be proud to walk down to the beach with it under your arm! Just remember painting a stand up paddle board is gonna take a lot of paint!
