What's a Hawaiian doing in Greenland?
It was an epic plan... if only the wind played fair!
We haven't heard much from him lately, probably because he's been planning this mammoth trip from Canada to Greenland by Stand Up Paddle board. The feat involved an inflatable (yep, inflatable) SUP from Starboard, some survival gear and one very determined Hawaiian guy in a drysuit. But unfortunately, (definitely not by lack of effort) Bart had to cancel the trip due to the extremely bad weather during the journey.
Obviously pretty disappointed, Bart said earlier this week on his blog:
"Deciding not to do the crossing probably took me more courage than actually doing the crossing. But I am glad I didn't do it. In the week I paddled in Greenland I have seen the condition change radically from relatively warm to icy cold and windy. With the low pressures and the amount of ice it wouldn't have been safe.
Even now I had days with headwinds were it took me 8 hrs to do 12 mile. Although normally a very fast board, this inflatable with the amount of gear I had, just wasn't fast enough for long distances."
What a shame! Don't worry though, after all that time paddling around in Greenland, Bart is planning on publishing a few videos and stacks of photos of the trip.
